What are my chances? Suggest some schools that fit my interesting profile.

Ohio Resident
32Q MCAT
3.00 GPA
3 Years of Research
3 Publications (1 first author)
Summer with R&D of major world company
Summer fellowship in bioinformatics
Additional 5 months research in neurology
University Symphony
6 months volunteering
Instrument to high level since toddler years

Any chance some schools see past the awful GPA in biochemistry?

Hi,

Your GPA is very low. The MCAT is nice, but I don't think its enough to get past the GPA. I think MD is very bleak, and DO is a bit tough too.

I should clarify, I'm looking for helpful advice and informed thoughts...

Haha, sorry for the short response, it does look a bit terse. But honestly, you ECs are great, but not enough to make up for the GPA. You need to do something to make up for the GPA. Is your science GPA below 3? If so, MD will be very tough. Try to retake some courses you did bad in, then maybe you can get your GPA to like 3.4 and have a good chance at DO.

I guess what I'm looking for are specific school guidances. For example, Illinois has a 10% sGPA of 3.0 and a median MCAT of 31. But I don't know if those stats are only because of grad students applying later with better grad GPAs or the result of a heavy favor for in-state applicants.

Are there places that favor research so much or Ohio residency that they are reasonable shots for admission or at least an interview?

Do you have a upward trend? (Which is important if you are not screened out)

I believe most schools have a cutoff around your GPA, so you should apply to many schools. Select your schools by looking at GPA ranges for the schools to determine whether you will be screened out and whether the schools will accept out of state student. You can find these GPA ranges in the MSAR or the school selector that is going around in this site.

What were your grade patterns like? Did you bomb a few classes but did really well in most or were you a pretty consistent B student in everything? If it is the former, you can retake those courses, do amazing, and have grade replacement with a DO application within a year.

Otherwise, you might consider doing a SMP to increase your GPA.
Based upon this chart, https://www.aamc.org/download/157450/data/table24-mcatgpagridall2008-10.pdf.pdf have about a 30% chance with MD.

Yes, I would apply to all instate MD and DO schools. I think Ohio has quite a bit of schools, so that should be in your favor. As for OOS, check the MSAR and just see which schools are closest to your overall stats. I think the MSAR shows which schools value research, so it will def help your chances if you apply to those schools.

The GPA is lousy. Do a postbac or SMP.
