Hi, I am a second year medical student at a US MD school. I had a quick question regarding my chances for residency in the future. I recently learned that I failed a class in second year in medical school and I will have to remediate it. So on my transcript it will show up as a c/p and also it will be mentioned in my deans letter. However, this class is not one of the major classes. It is a public health class that meets once a week for 10 weeks. It is my fault 100%. I just did not take it seriously enough and I learned my lesson. In addition, I will be taking a year of leave of absence after my second year because of a sick family member that I have to take care of. I will also spend a few months ( 3 or 4) during the leave of absence doing some research. I still have to take STEP 1. However, I am not that great of a student. I was wondering what my chances are at family medicine or hopefully community internal medicine resiliencies if I just pass my usmle step 1 and just pass my rotations. I also have not really been part of any clubs or activities during the first 2 years of med school. Thank you for your time.
