After a long time of reading this forum, I would like the readers of this forum to tell me what they think about my chances for admission into Med. school.

I am about to turn 25 years old.

Here is a rundown of my past.

-Went to an excellent jesuit high school, but only completed 3 years prior to dropping out soon after my father died. Maintained a 3.7gpa

-Earned my Ged and joined the Marines for a period of 4 years in order to try and get my life back on track and leave my neighborhood. Honorable discharge '02.

-Have been attending Wayne State University in Detroit and have earned 60 credits with a 3.7 gpa.

-I was offered a 3 month research position at Cornell's Wilson lab last summer. While there I wrote a scientific paper.

-I have had about a year of volunteer work in an ER. I have been working as an EMT for the past 6 months. I am also a licensed firefighter.

I love medicine and am ready to dedicate myself to the long years to come, but I am scarred that my past will prevent this.

Thank you in advance for any comments.

Alex

what the hell is wrong with your past...as long as you do well on the MCAT, you have 8,000 life experiences. Take it in august the year before you apply...or april of that year.

If you have been reading these forums for awhile...you probably are ready for all of the answers that you are going to get.

It seems as if your GPA is going to be fine as long as you keep up the work and that your sciene gpa is high as well as your non-science. The MCAT will go a long way in telling wether or not you have a chance. Study hard and do well on the MCAT. It seems to me as if you have proven yourself in the last several years, if I were on an ADCOM...I would not see your past as an issue. Rather, I would see your dedication to getting your life back in order as a positive quality.

Good luck.

FYI: You may want to search old posts similar to this...there are a million of them out there. Each time, the replies seem to be kind of the same--you will get a good idea where you stand from there.

Searching as I type this. Thanks for the feedback. I look forward to meeting everyone here and taking part in the day-to-day happenings.

Thanks,

Alex

Although the algorithm takes the MCAT into account and I had to modify it to accomodate you.

sounds to me like your past is an asset not a liability, do reasonably well on the MCATs and you have a great chance. good luck! :luck:

I am 25 and I also did not finish high school. I drove a dump truck for two years before diving into the medical field: transporter, EKG, EEG, and ultrasound. I got in on my first try. Here are my stats 3.6 gpa (3.8 sci), and an awful MCAT 26 (9,9,8). BTW, I got into ECU and wait-listed at George Washington. Just rock on the MCAT.

Ditto everyone.

Keep doing well and make sure to put in all the necessary time and effort to do as well as possible on the MCAT. NOTHING in your past (that you've given us) will serve to keep you out of medical school; the experiences will likely give you some extra points of reference over "biobots" that are also applying. I cannot stress the value of the MCAT enough...a 3.7 and a 33 MCAT is a world away from a 3.7/ 23 MCAT.

Keep doing well, and be sure to let us know what medical school you get into!
