Hey guys, so I am currently going into my sophomore year of college. It's a STEM school and pretty rigorous but not Ivy League. My gpa my first year was a little rough...around a 2.9. I know I'll do better for the years coming up but I know my gpa won't be a 3.7 or up.

My question is if you guys think my chances of getting into EVMS down the road are okay...I'll have some great letters of reccomendation/references, my personal statement will be strong, and the school is in state so I'm hoping all of those will make up for my gpa. I'm goin to study my ass of for the mcats and become EMT certified with lots of volunteering. With all that being said, do you think I'll get into EVMS? Thanks!

I am not sure why you are specifically inquiring about EVMS but no medical school will care that you went to a STEM (never heard anyone reference a college as such) school, unless it was MIT. I am uncertain as to what makes you believe that your GPA is going to be improved. It's unnecessary to become EMT certified as that won't get you any extra points either. If you are majoring in engineering, I suggest that you don't because they are notorious for graduating with low GPA which once again won't be appreciated by any medical school.

In short, if you get 3.7 GPA, great MCAT, ECs, etc yes your application will be deemed competitive.

DEFINITELY don't get your heart set on going to a specific medical school. Odds are you will come out of the process disappointed. Also, the undergrad school really doesn't matter. Even if you take an extra year, try to get that GPA 3.5+ and hope you get into ANY school. Change your major to something easier if you are struggling. If you are still struggling and KNOW you want to go to med school, transfer to an easier school. The mcat will play a major part as well.
