Hello everyone. I am permanent resident of Canada and live there.
I am planning to pursue optometry but heres my situation.
I am currently in 2nd sem of my first year at university. I was not a serious student in first sem and bombed my grades. These are the courses i have taken and grades. My gpa for these 7 courses was 2.3.

SEMESTER 1
Calculus I D
General Biology I B-
Gen Chemistry C
Introductory Stat C
Humanities elective Language Punjabi A

Summer/Spring
English 121 C+
English 124 B

These grades do not reflect my potential because I completely slacked off. I know I can do much better.Even without studying anything I was able to get b- in bio. I love biology. Do I still have a chance to get into optometry after completing my BSc. After taking these courses I also took a year off to do soul searching and research an alternative career to medicine which is still in Sciences faculty. It was computing science. Do op schools prefer bio and chem majors or can i major in computing science and take prereqs with it. will that decline my chances more? I took 7 courses which still leaves me 33 courses for my undergrad degree. What kind of Grades will I need to pull for the rest of the courses to increase my chances? straight A's or ?

I volunteered at center for disable people for 100 hours.
I play basketball with my friends in my free time and am learning to play a musical instrument. If i still have a chance I can start volunteering in hospitals, get into research and shadow a doctor etc.

I am not picky about where and which optometry schools I want to attend. I am willing to go to US. ( Very few Canadian op schools here in Canada so the competition is through the roof).

I am going to be honest. I am choosing this because I enjoy Biology lots and Not mind helping people solve health problems everyday. Plus the career is also financially very good after paying debts.

Thanks everyone.

you'll be fine as long as you start working hard for what you want and do better in your classes. I started my first quarter with a 2.0.. had under 3.0 my first 2 years and worked hard my last 2. Got in to my top 2 choices.

it's still really early in your undergraduate career. there's plenty of time to raise your gpa.

You're not the first person to ever screw up your first semester of college and certainly will not be the last. Like the poster above me said, you're still early in your undergrad studies. I would advise you to start working hard now and show optometry schools what you can do. Showing a sharp upward trend in your grades will say a lot.

....if you were applying for medical school, opinions of posters here would be very different.

Just goes to show you where Optometry is in the grand scheme of things 😴

Thanks everyone.

Continued grades like that will not get you in at all. You wouldn't even get an interview. Your total GPA is going to have to be a 3.0 at MINIMUM for most schools to look at you seriously. You will need to retake that Calculus class.

Your major doesn't matter. You just need to do the pre-reqs. However, a science degree will leave you better prepared for the courses you will experience in grad school, though you will still be able to succeed b/c that is what schools are evaluating and any decent school wouldn't accept you if they didn't think you could cut it.

Keep volunteering, doing the research, SHADOW SHADOW SHADOW, even shadow other professions to be sure you really want optometry. The basketball and musical instruments are to help keep you sane, but won't matter on your applications.

Oh, and ignore Socal. SDN will be awarding him 'Useless Poster of the Year' next month.

Opinions of posters doesn't equal opinions of schools. 🙂
