Hello everyone. I am permanent resident of Canada and live there.
I am planning to pursue dental but heres my situation.
I am currently in 2nd sem of my first year at university. I was not a serious student in first sem and bombed my grades. These are the courses i have taken and grades. My gpa for these 7 courses was 2.3.

SEMESTER 1
Calculus I D
General Biology I B-
Gen Chemistry C
Introductory Stat C
Humanities elective Language Punjabi A

Summer/Spring
English 121 C+
English 124 B

These grades do not reflect my potential because I completely slacked off. I know I can do much better.Even without studying anything I was able to get b- in bio. I love biology. Do I still have a chance to get into dental after completing my BSc. After taking these courses I also took a year off to do soul searching and research an alternative career to medicine which is still in Sciences faculty. It was computing science. Do dental schools prefer bio and chem majors or can i major in computing science and take prereqs with it. will that decline my chances more? I took 7 courses which still leaves me 33 courses for my undergrad degree. What kind of Grades will I need to pull for the rest of the courses to increase my chances? straight A's or ?

I volunteered at center for disable people for 100 hours.
I play basketball with my friends in my free time and am learning to play a musical instrument. If i still have a chance I can start volunteering in hospitals, get into research and shadow a doctor etc.

I am not picky about where and which med schools I want to attend. I am willing to go to US and even Caribbean dental schools ( Very few Canadian dental schools here in Canada so the competition is through the roof).

I am going to be honest. I am choosing this because I enjoy Biology lots and Not mind helping people solve health problems everyday. Plus the career is also financially very good after paying debts.

If I don't make it to dental, Would i still be able to get admission into my 2nd choice med school or 3rd Optometry or 4rd choice pharmacy?( Is pharmacy intense on chemistry because I don't enjoy Chemistry hence its my last choice but can get good grades by studying)

Thanks everyone.

First of all, you need to relax, you are a freshman with a 2.3 GPA on 1 semester... suppose your next semester you end up 4.0-ing all classes, that just brought up your GPA to 3.15....Point being: you can easily repair this minor damage, you still got 3-4 years of college left.

You can major in anything you like, if its computer science, then by all means go for it. The most important undergrad criteria is your GPA (not your major).... Obviously the higher the better, IMO, with today's USA applicant standards, students with 3.5 overall and science GPAs tend to be most qualified for interviews... I dunno how it would be for you canadians, the bar might be set a little higher.

As far as your 2nd / 3rd / 4th choices go.... It really depends on what you are talking about:

-Carribean medical schools (and I am strictly talking about the "big 4" ~ Ross, SGU, AUC, and Saba) have a tendency to accept students with 3.0 (or lower) GPAs with 22-25 MCATs, Saba doesn't even require MCAT (I think).....these schools are fairly easy to get into, easier than canadian and USA medical schools thats for sure

-If your talking about USA allopathic med schools, then I say no... If you couldn't make it into dental school here, chances are, you won't into allopathic either (since the consensus is that they are even more competitive than dental schools)..... But you might have a better chance at osteopathic med schools (ofc it depends on your numbers, osteopaths aren't THAT easy)

-I can't say anything about pharmacy or optometry, I know nothing about their admission criteria

Ditto to what others said - you're only a freshman! Just go with an upward trend from now on. I'm not sure what straight A's for the rest of your college years would get you for GPA, but I think you can even have a few B's here and there and you would still be OK.

Just work hard! If you really want to go to dental school, you have plenty of time to fix yourself up so you can look all pretty on your application.

As for the other fields... if you don't get into dentistry, I don't think your application would hold up for medicine either. Maybe D.O., but not M.D. Also, pharmacy does have a lot of chemistry (the reason why it was not for me, since I also hate chemistry).
