HI i am just wonder I am a biology major and I should have changed my major because i realized I hated biology but my parents wouldn't let me and now my gpa suffered from that. I have a 3.08 GPA and I have 5 Cs and retook two classes. I have been studying for the past two months for my oats and i am taking them in August.
I volunteer at my church health fair for past 5 years.
I shadow two doctors at suny Optometry that are a on the board for administration. ( and one of them will write my letter of recommendation)
and i have shadowed a third doctor near by my college.
what are my chances of getting into any optometry schools?
thank you

First off, you aren't getting into SUNY (high chance). Secondly, if you hate biology then why are you going into healthcare? At some point you have to put your foot down and do what YOU want to do not your parents. But yes if you do OK on your OAT's you'll get into some optometry schools.

I don't see anywhere in the OP that he/she asked specifically about SUNY.

OP: If you hate biology, you really should think twice about optometry. Health care is specifically about biology...I would say the most important sections on the OAT are biology and physics because of their relevance to the field.

Did you not see where he/she mentioned SUNY? This may mean he/she is in the area and would probably enjoy going to this school. Just giving advice...don't need the internet police on me...

Ah, I missed it because it wasn't capitalized. Sorry about that. I struggle with some of the abysmal grammar and spelling on this board--it makes things harder to read (plus I'm near-sighted, so that's an excuse, right? 😉).

OP: As I stated above, please explain why you want to even bother with optometry if you dislike biology so much.

I am sure you will get in somewhere if you do well on the oat. Optometry isnt as competitive as it used to be with all these new schools opening up. Regarding the whole biology thing, I would disregard what everyone is saying. Your optometry career isnt going to revolve around the cell biology you learn in school. The only time you will concern yourself with biology in optometry school is during your first year bio class, which just rehashes everything you learned in undergrad. Best wishes to you on the oat and application process.

I really do hate biology but I really want to become an optometrist. Hating biology never made me hate the idea of optometry school. I have always tried to keep my head up, tried my best in school and hoped for the best. I never wanted biology to be the reason why I could not get into optometry school but seems like it might be the reason. My goal in life is to volunteer and provide eye care to people in need. Becoming an optometrist has been something I wanted to do for a long time. I assumed you needed a biology degree to get into optometry school. I did not have the correct knowledge of the pre-requirements for optometry school. I really enjoyed chemistry in college and when I realized I could major in chemistry and still become an optometrist I was so happy. BUT my parents did not see it that way. That is why I am in the spot I am today. I really want to become an optometrist.

And I know I cannot get into SUNY I did my research this time. But I just want to know if I could get into any other school in US.
I am really sorry for my extremely bad grammar and spelling errors.
thank you

I'd say optometry is heavily focused on biology and physics. Chemistry is also in there but not as much. It wouldn't be easy but if you really have the motivation I think you can do it 🙂

Honestly i understand how u feel cause im a bio major and i dont like bio either. Its not that big of a deal. My gpa is the exact same as yours. DO good on your OAT and be honest in your essay and you'll be fine.

You could make biology work for you by majoring in Biophysics.

It is much more interesting than just memorizing facts and stuff. Though, the physics can get a bit tricky.

Just know that if you are doing it not for a passion for the sciences but rather for the money then you will not be happy nor will you be a good clinician.

Thanks everyone for the feed back.
And honestly I am not doing it for the money. I am doing this because they are people in need in this world and I would be blessed to help others. Money doesn't get you every where in life. thank you all for your feedback
