Well im almost done with my freshman year...

Im not sure what GPA i will end with... but at the worst it will be like 3.35 overall. How bad is that for a freshman?

By the way, what is a GPA that i should stay at, and expect to get in a dental school? Please be honest. I promise you, you will not hurt my feelings. 🙁

Don't worry, you did a good job this year! 3.35 is not bad at all! If you average 3.35 for the rest of your college years, plus some extracurricular activities, you should be able to get into many dental schools (but keep in mind that GPA for accepted dental students will rise each year).
Try to improve your GPA each quarter/semester. If you are a bio major, you will see that classes will get harder, so work hard, it will pay off! My freshman GPA is like a 2.9, but now I end up with a 3.65. So it's doable! Good luck 😀

hmm, cool

Yeh, im a bio major. So how did u do it?

Im the biggest slacker i know. I absolutely didnt do crap this year. What do you guys do to study? Seriously, you guys really really spend all that time in the books and the library? Is that the only way?

By the way, I'm taking Organic I, Physics I, Biology I, and a Philosophy class next semester. Is that really bad, or is that doable too, and how?

Thanks.

What is bad? What is doable?

Of course it is doable, and of course it is not bad. Stop selling yourself short. Think positive.

Like DesiDentist said, it's totally do-able. It may be hard to take 3 sciences class in the same quarter, but you will get used to it. You will learn important time management skills, test-taking skills and learn to study effectively. Then you will see your grades go up. After you learn your time management skills, you need to use your spare time to do research and/or other activities...
There are different ways of studying in different subjects, for instance, Bio is more of memorizing, so you can cram, or slack off a little (I study Bio a week before the exam). But for O-chem and physics, you need to be constantly doing problems; especially for Ochem, you need to understand the concepts to derive the mechanisms, don't just memorize. I am not so good at physics, I usually don't care how the professor derive the equations, I just need to know how to use them in the problem (you don't need physics in dental school anywayz..) So usually if the professor suck, I just ditch the classes, and use that time to do something useful.
I really don't do a lot of studying, because I think the important thing is not the quantity of your study, but the quality. Study smart, not just study hard.

Usually, to keep my grades up, every quarter I will take some other interesting classes (or easy classes), to keep my grades up, just in case if I mess up.

...these are just my method of studying, it may not be useful to everyone....

I would say it is not the question of doability, I am sure that there has been people to have taken 5-6 science classes together and have done really good. I think you need to better your GPA and try to keep it up. Not that your GPA is bad now, but higher GPA would give you better chance at getting in to the dental school of your choice.
I think if you take this schedule, you definitely have to spend more time in the library!!

I might as well throw this questions in here. How is retaking a class calculated into dental GPAs? For instance if I get an 'F' in a class, and I retake that class and get an 'A', what will that count as? Two C's? One C? Or, hopefully, an A?

It counts as 1 A and 1 F.

For all those worrying about GPAs and DAT score, whether you're a freshman, or junior take a deep breath. So long as you're consistant, and show promise you're in good standing. I know a few kids who started off a little shaky (over 3.0 is solid) and have gotten in. That also includes a bad semester here or there. With all due respects I got interview invitations to all the schools I applied to, and was not the 4.0 kid with 28 dat. (I was the 3.98 with 26 DAT jk).😉
As my future classmate Desidentist said, you're in good standing. Just maintain you're gpa, and if you hesitant about taking all those science classes break them up. Easier to digest the info that way......but just to let you know it is very doable. I took some killer courses all in one semester and came out of my coma.....jk
Keep you head up you;ll be fine guys.......
All the best😎

In regards to the one A, one F....

I think that only the higher grade gets calculated into your GPA, but both show up on your transcript...so if they look, they do see the poor grade.

no worries i know someone w/ 3 F's and got into just about every school 🙂 but he took a lot of time odd (he's in his 30's)
