I just had my interview at UNC a couple of days ago. It turned out to be a complete shock; everyone i had talked to who had interviewed at unc told me it was stress free and laid back. My interviewer completely screwed me up. i mean, as i walk in the first question he asks is " Do you believe there is politics that goes in science and research" ? i had no clue what he was expecting me to say; then he goes on and starts asking me about why galileo was persecuted by society, and if i believed there are still people like that in society today. Then he turns the whole discussion about cloning and asks me how we should stop other countries' govt from allowing reproductive cloning. This goes on, he kept asking me these kinds of questions for about 3/4th of the interview, when he gets some sense and decides to ask some questions about my research. Oh, and did i mention he asks me why i want to be a doctor; i gave my usual answer about my childhood experiences and later added i want to interact with people and also learn and apply my knowldge about human body. He replies " how is this different from being an anatomy teacher?" ....wtf? I mean i gave answer to every single question w/o getting too excited...but this was just exhausting.. he ends the interview by saying " i hope things work out for you"... yeah right!

Anyone else had similar experiences anywhere? I can see interviewers asking a few ethical questions; but not a series of them lasting the entire interview...

I feel like sometimes schools just know that they're going to accept you so the interviewer just takes the interview as an opportunity to spout off his/her own beliefs or to be cutting edge or something - I don't know, maybe I'm completely off base - but the point is - don't take it as good or bad. You'll probably get in anyway. You hear this a lot - read the "bad interview experience" threads - lots of "My interview sucked and then I got in" stories. Don't worry.

**** dude, that really sucks. I felt like my UNC interview went insanely well, the whole time I felt like both interviewers were trying to build me up! I have never felt so validated after an interview (or really anything else)... though I will admit that my first interviewer tried to rattle me in the first 5 mins.

PM me, what day did you go, maybe we were on the same day?

Sounds like a tough interview 🙁

The only comment I can make is that people are people. Sounds like your interviewer had a bit of a hobby horse he wanted to ride. Or maybe he just came from a bad interview, or a meeting or ..... you get the picture.

I hope that it doesn't affect your chances and you were still rated as well as you would have with one of the 'laid back' interviewers.

Who did you have? Mine asked me to differentiate between Tae Kwon Do and Kung Fu and then after I told him the history of Kung FU and its martial applications compared to TKD he then opened up his photo album and showed me pictures of his grandchildren that were black belts in TKD. 😕 😱 🙁

The interview went like that for over one hour. Family issues, my gender, my weaknesses, may less than stellar 30 MCAT (he asked me if I was going to take it again😕 ), quized me on my personal statement, assumed I was pro-abortion, asked me was ZOE meant, asked me if I thought Jesus wanted the church to be the way it is today, told me my strive for perfection was a not a suitable mix for medical school, told me I couldn't do it and be a good mother....the list continues.

However, when I walked out I oddly felt good about my interview and wrote him an extensive thank you letter expressing my thoughts about the interview.

I had the TKD guy too! He was so sweet!

The guy asking me those tough questions was Dr. John Kizer. I don't think my interview went bad, but i wasn't expecting those many questions and now I can't be sure if it went good or that I answered him the way he was expecting. I kept a positive attitude and smiled at the end and even asked for his email when he gave me his card. He then said "I hope things work out for you", gets up from his chair and shows me the way back to admission office. I really don't know what to think at this point, or whether i should ask for a reinterview. Do you guys know exactly how much interview factors in making the final decision?

Ahhhh...the UNC interview. Lotsa luck, y'all.

ST's interview:

UNC: Explain this C in chemistry

ST: Well, that was 6 years ago when I was a freshman and didn't know how to manage both studying and working. But I've since retaken that class while working full-time and I made an A.

UNC: It doesn't matter. How do you expect to get into medical school if you made a C in chemistry?"

Uh, yeah. I love my ugrad alma mater, but I'm so happy at ECU for medical school!!!

The people who had a Tae-Kwan-Do question... did you interview with Dr. Cephalo? Just sounds like something he would ask.

Is that you Dr. C? I'm just curious about your profile name...Guam....hmmm:idea:
