Please Help me:

Overall GPA - 3.30
Science GPA - 2.738
DAT - AA=19, TS=19, PAT=19

My science GPA is low because of 1 class that I failed and had to re-take. I will be starting a 1-year Master program in the Fall to show that I have changed/matured. My last 1.5 years in undergrad were very strong, but it doesn't help much with the damage from that 1 class.

Here are my schools I am applying to:

Tufts, BU, MWU-IL, USC, NYU, Nova, Howard, Meharry, Univ of Kentucky, Loma Linda, Temple, Univ of Tennessee, Roseman, LECOM, ASDOH.

I have 15 here, but I need at least 20 schools that I can apply to with my GPA. Any advice to which additional schools I can apply to that I may have a chance with getting in.

With a sub 3.0 science GPA I think you should try and retake the DAT and go for 20s+ across the board.. 👍

Thanks, I am thinking about re-taking my DAT and have been studying. I took it last semester during a time when I had other exams going on, so I could have done better.

If I were to get 21+ which schools could I add onto this list as provided in the original post.

Get rid of Howard, meharry and Loma Linda...add a couple other schools instead.

UNLV, Minnesota, Indiana, Louisville, Western, Midwest-AZ

Nova also does a very poor job at reviewing applications with under a 3.5 gpa or 21 DAT ( you need one or the other for them).

U of K and Tennessee are also a waste of money unless your a resident...your list needs a lot of work and your sci gpa and DAT are hurting your app...sorry for multiple posts I only am trying to help ..also temple had a secret cut off of a 3.0BCP.

Was going to say the same thing. Are you a resident of KY otherwise take UK off. I have also noticed a trend of low GPAs applying to LECOM. They are actually more competitive than I realized. They had almost 3000 applicants last cycle.

Thanks for the responses periopocket and Hev0406. Considering my situation do you think that I am better off doing my 1-year masters and applying next year? Or is it worth applying to maybe like 10-12 schools to see if anything happens. Dental Schools will probably see my first quarter grades of my masters program because the quarter ends in December. I know my gpa hurts my app a lot and maybe re-taking this DAT will possibly help a little.

Also does anyone know about University of New England Dental School in Maine? I think its the first time this school is opening up this fall 2013. Are there any stats out there for this school? Is it worth taking chances to apply to this school with my gpa and dat scores?

If you somehow could retake the DAT And get a 21+ on the dat, I wouldn't discourage you from applying. I applied two cycles in a row: the first cycle I was unsuccessful but it did allow me to hold conversations with many schools and receive feedback, which ultimately got
Me accepted to 5 schools this year. A masters made all the difference.

I can't quite give you the "correct" advice because this is my first time applying. I too have a lower GPA and I'm aiming for a high DAT. The way I see it is if I think I have a fighting chance I'm def applying! I suppose I'll know more come July when I get my DAT scores lol. Just have the most confidence when applying. Research schools down to a T. I've been to a lot of open houses. Some weigh a lot on GPA and some weigh on DAT scores. Others will forgive a crappy start in college if you have an upward trend. LECOM focuses on whether or not you are passionate about practicing in undeserved communities. It's really about finding the school that fits your situation 🙂. And if you don't get in this time around like someone above said, call the schools and ask why? Most of them will say "improve this or that", and then you know what to do. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide!
