seriously. Whenever I look at it, it is all I..., I...., I..... At first i was like, its a personal statement there should be a lot of I's, but now I think I o.ded on the I's. I mean, it sucks to realize your ps is what is going to screw you over. No one who read it for me had anything to say on how to fix it. sorry i just needed another form of releasing my frustration because I have no more hair to pull from my head. cheerio

Don't stress too much about your personal statement, it probably isn't as important as you think. Just be honest and concise and you'll be good to go. (oh yeah and watch for spelling errors)

it's okay, at least it doesn't suck

i agree, don't stress too much. make it clear and concise, and make it sound like you. i think we all get psyched out by it, but i don't think it's as important as we make it out to be. stay cool and let it flow and then hit the submit button.

These type of threads about uninspired personal statements seem to be pretty common, so I'm just going to go ahead and say this for everyone's benefit: Your personal statement is all about you, so if you find that it's a pretty boring read, then odds are you're a pretty boring person.

i realize the ps is about me. I was just complaining that because it is about me there was a whole boat load of I's in it. All i was doing was just venting which I am sure other people come on these boards to do and realize they are not the only person going through X problem. nor am i boring...or at least that is what I tell myself.

I know you were just looking for some sympathy but the god's honest truth is that very few people have great stories to tell or are talented enough writers to make a commonplace story interesting. For the most part personal statements are very similar, very boring, and do little to set an applicant apart from other applicants.

qué?

I actually think that the personal statement is just as important as GPA and DAT scores.

I second this thought.

Just A tip:

instead of saying: " I volunteered at X dental office and I shadowed 24 dentists and hygienists and I learned ABC.", you can say: Volunteering at X dental office and shadowing the large staff allowed me to become exposed to ABC.
you just took out 3 I's.

Here's a useful tip that's really hard to do...don't tell, describe. That should get rid of some of the "I's".

Did you look at the PS part of this website, there is a very good tutorial there. Read some essays by writers like William Burroughs or Hunter Thompson or Bukowski and then write...

In my opinion, I believe a personal statement is very important.
I personally try to do my best on my personal statement.. and even dream about how can I make it sound better in my dreams  ... It's very frustrating, but that's part of it.

You are expected to have many "I's" on your personal statement I think...so you're fine..but as long as it is not ... "I went to the park with my dog. I also saw others dogs, then I ...I totally...I think...I was...I came..." If it is, then your sentences are not well structured. Have some people that are English majors or your professors to give you some feedback and tell them your concern.. 👍

🙂 hey, i dunno if you'd be interested or not, but sometimes it helps to have someone who doesn't know you from a hill of beans to read over your ps just so you get a true feeling of if you have given a good impression of your personality--since that's basically what the ps is...a taste of who you are so they know if you're worth their time. i have a little extra time until august so if you want, i'm willing to help you if you like. i have a strong english background (don't judge me by my typing on here...still getting over having my tonsils out...sucks) and was actually told by committee members that my ps impressed them. anywho, just pm me if you're interested.

The personal statement is very important in my opinion. It is the 'face' of your application. Take the opportunity and make the best of it. Edit a lot and have several people look at it and give their constructive criticism.

I was in the same boat as you, I'm trying to get my essay together, you can try buying a book on writing personal statements, it's helpful on brainstorming, the way to write it and the things commitee would like to see and things they really don't want to see. Best of luck 😉

--Personal Statement Question--

I think that I have written an honest, humorous, and straight foward personal statement. Here's the problem though, it's only 3000 characters. I can obviously go back and add filler material, but I am rather content with what I have written.

What do you guys/girls think I should do? Add to it? Submit it? Quit trying to get into Dental School?

Thanks

very true. at one of my interviews the Dir of admissions came up to me and said that he read my essay "many times over and over"; just because he liked it. And yes, i got into that school.

mine is 3500 characters.......it doesn't matter how long your essay is, its a matter of whether u say wut u need to say.

IMHO, you should read it and see what you haven't talked about enough. I had a statement almost twice the required length to start with and found it very hard to chop down. I even omitted talking about my research at all when I've been doing it for 2 years. I think that you should try hard to think of how you can make the ps represent you more completely. I think the more you have, the better it is, unless it's all filler - certainly quality is more important than quntity. I'm sure you can come up with substantial info to bring up the length a bit. anyway, good luck.
