I'm a junior and I study approx 3-6 hrs per night. I mean it's not like I study for some ridiculous amount of time (8,9,10 hours). Plus I'm taking o-chem and I'm starting to go over mcat material

O.........K...........

In this field, too much may still not be enough. Once you have completed your schooling and receive the fruits of your labor, you will spend more time keeping up. Med-Line will be your friend and studies, journals, and research papers will mount in the restroom for further review. The coffee table will always have the freshest copy of the New England Journal of Medicine. Your homepages will be, CNN HEALTH, WEBMD, MED-LINE REMOTE ACCESS, NEJM.com, MAYO CLINIC, and so forth.

You can understand where I am coming from. You put in what you want out of it. There will be time for fun, whether it be now or in the future when you are travelling in Asia or are the guest attending at some foreign hospital.

Oh come on, don't scare her like that. I'm an M1 and I have plenty of time. Just look at my post count for proof.

I know, but you know...I had to

back to the OP,

I think if you are studying for the MCAT along with school, 3-6 hrs a day is not unreasonable. This is a very important time in your life, and maybe your roommate doesn't understand that. I would definitely not study 3-6 hrs everyday for just my classes though... that's way too much.

Umm....what major is your roommate??

I think 3-6 hours a day is totally normal. I probably study for that much every day, or even more, and I'm a senior (and already got accepted). Don't flip out ... studying that much is normal, especially since it's orgo + MCAT.

Hey Zero and Vegan,

Don't be that person. Study what you can and still have fun. If you roomate talks **** and it bothers you, then study less. 🙂 Basically, its all about YOUR balance. I don't consider myself to study very much, but I often go past the 3hrs/day mark if you count the reading I do between classes. It's all relative.

PS Don't room with biz majors. They got your number for at least the next 6 years (less work, more pay, and, really, more usefulness [note- being a premed, or even being a med stud, you contribute very little... but that's the way the game is setup]).

Or just study the same amount you do now but start going out more. If you're studying 3 hours per day that still leaves plenty of time to have fun and go out. 🙂

Vegangirl,

I know how you feel. Freshman year, I roomed w/ and english major, and sophmore year with a theater major. 🙄

It's tough to be labeled as a geek or obsessive studier, but you have to do what's best for YOU. Reflect on your life - are you studying as much as you need to in order to feel prepared for exams, or are you overdoing it? If you're overdoing it, then cut down. If you feel that you're doing a reasonable amount, then who cares what anyone else says? You have to get the best grades you possibly can so that you can achieve your dream of being a physician - and if that means being a little less cool in your roommate's eyes, then f*** him 😛

The important part is that you're happy with how things are going. This is your life, and if you feel that you're doing the right thing for YOU, then f*** everyone else. Seriously. I went through the same thing as you, and I'm VERY happy that I didn't listen to anyone. I'm currently juggling a bunch of interviews to some great schools, and every damn hour of studying I did was worth it. Let me repeat that: IT WAS WORTH IT.

Good luck, and grow a thicker skin.

- Quid 😉

Gotta tell you that I studied, but only after the parties were over. It's about deciding to make having fun an important part of your life. I accepted chronic procrastination and a some stress as a small sacrifice for having a damn good time...
And if you're studying 6 or so hours a night (DAMN, that is ALOT of studying), you are not "getting some." and that's pretty important...to me anyway.

was that "HELLLO" written with a valley girl accent?

Why in the world would you create an entire thread on this?

I think one of the most dangerous things can be your peer group, and you don't even realize it. To the non-pre-med (thats a lot of hyphens), all the work seems crazy. They are just looking for a degree to get a job, and GPA is only important as far as not getting booted from school.

So they look at what you do, through their filters and perceptions, and think you are just "wasting your time".

College can be a lot of fun, but I think ultimately studying should take priority over having fun. I've been in a fraternity, drank WAY more than I should have, and can say from personal experience, that my peer group was a huge problem for me. I wonder how things would have turned out had I been around more success orientated people, instead of "I got so wasted at blah blah blah last night and hooked up with the uglist girl in the greek system that 5 other brothers did last month".

Ultimately, you know if you study too much. You also know if you go out to much. I think finding that precious, heavenly balance is the key.

I say smile at your roommate, say "you're probably right", then do whatever you want to.

3 hours per day is nothing! there are plenty of people i have classes with that study at least 5 or 6 hours a day during the week and sometimes even stay home on friday and saturday nights to study. i try not to be one of those people, but i must admit there are a couple days per week where i spend at least 4 hours studying. if you still have time for fun, then what is wrong with studying 3 hours per night? tell your roommate, who probably has a b.s. major, to f*** off. i know i hate it when someone with a bulls*** major tries to give me s*** about studying. do whatever makes you happy and whatever will help you reach your goals in life!

-laura

Who cares what your roommate says?

Time management. You can go to all classes, study 3-5hrs a day, work out, play rec sports, work and party a few times a week. The day is pretty long if you're not wasting it.

I agree, I manage to be a member of the crew team, run numerous times a week, rock climb on saturdays (not all saturdays though🙁), go out with friends a few times a week and I have a solid gpa and am looking at all a's in my classes so far this semester. Its all about what you do with your time and how you study.

i mean, semesters go by where i am lucky to have enough time to study more than 15 minutes a day! (i'm sucked into a lot of EC's and meetings, etc. etc. etc.).

🙁
do what you love!

and i got into 3 med schools so far anyway! yoohoo!

To me, getting a B and being involved talks a lot more about your character than just studying to get the A. In the end, it's really what you remember, and how socially adept you are.

rant
My roomie used to think I studied to much. Of course, that dumb b%#!h was only seeing me complete the assignments that were required of my classes. 🙄 Maybe I should just not read the assignments, go to class, and look like an @sshole 🙄 Stupid undeclared-majoring wh@re.

/end rant

If you haven't seen the sun in a month and your skin is transparent, study less. IT's all about balance. Hate to break it you, but it only gets worse....

I second that motion, hello...hehehe:laugh:

School is not like HS where you have 8 classes a day and don't get out until mid afternoon, you can schedule your own classes and even if you last class is at 6pm, there was time in between and let's say u do study for 3 hours..then it's only like 9pm when you are done...

And we all know that the GOOD parties and clubs don't get good until like 11pm ne way..ok:hardy:

I can do this all in ONE day:

1. Work out
2. Teach a dance class
3. Go to class on time, lol :meanie:
4. Go to work
5. Eat alot...
6. Visit friends
7. Surf the net
8. Buy some new threads
9. Study in the library
10. Eat again
11. Talk on the phone
12. Yoga/ Kickboxing
13. Go clubbing til 5am

Ohh yeah, and I take 20 credits a semester....

and then come home and do it again...well I am known as superwoman..😀

But I am sure that you can squeeze some fun into your life, that's only if you want it..if not then study on and forget you roomate..

College is fun:horns:

Party on:clap:

I didnt go out a whole lot my frosh year but opened up a lot my second year. It was worth it. The catch is to find the balance where you can put in X effort and achieve the ends you set out for yourself.

Coops

I managed to play video games 6 hours a day for a few months my freshman year, interspersing a haze of pot smoke with a hit of LSD once or twice. And still got good grades. My non-drug-and-video-game-oriented social life struggled though. I did perfect my procrastination and cramming skills. Those skills will be worthless in medical school. Keep up with the motivated studying.

Do what it takes to achieve what you want. It is alright to study 3 hours a day, it is something you got to do, then do it. I take 14 credit hours, work 40 hours a week, have a g/f who loves attention(you know this takes up a lot of time, and study 2-5 hours a day.🙂 )
Just remember Machiavellianism is your friend.

i studied 5 hours per night, sunday thru wednesday (this was during my orgo and cell bio days...) i pretty much lived in the library during the week, my ass imprint was on the couch...

but thursday thru saturday = PARTY!

it worked out great... and my roomie studied more, for poly sci

isnt that what freshman year is for??? or was it senior year?? or maybe all of them???????? hmmm

Last semester I had a really heavy course load. Neurophysiology, Neuroanatomy, Neurological Physiotherapy, Medical Anthropology, Neurological Conditions, and Organic Chem 2. I was studying almost every waking minute. Who gives a crap what other people think. You make the commitment you need to do well in school, after all, everyone Knows that your GPA is a critical step in the applications process. So you screw the critics and spend as much time as you need.

The only reason you are in school is because you want to study.
If you want to have fun go to some place else.

dudes, chill out. get some balance. it's not really amazing that someone studies all day and gets all A's - not amazing at all. what's so amazing is you're involved, go to tons of meetings, develop some leadership, make a DIFFERENCE before you even get into medical school - whether it's in your community or elsewhere --- no resume building but just doing stuff that you love doing ---- then that's a life worth living.

You go to school to learn and learning doesn't necessarily come by spending half of your life in the library.

In fact, I would say that some of my most meaningful learning experiences have come outside of the classroom. Academic learning is undoubtedly important but equally important is the life experience you gain by interacting with people and getting involved outside of the classroom.

I don't think 3-6 hours a day is a terrible amount of studying. If it helps you to be more confident and gets you good grades on exams, then it must be working for you.

yeah, it's pretty much how effective you are while "studying", whether it be in front of the tv watching football or in a quiet study environment studying w/ some study buddies.

I definitely studied that much per night, especially during orgo. My orgo prof told us that if we didn't study at least 2 hours/night, we wouldn't do well in the class (THAT was enough to scare me!)

I didn't start looking at the MCAT stuff till February, though... I took the Princeton Review class.

Wow, I was just about to start yelling at you for studying for the MCAT so early, but I guess I did prepare a lot for it too!

You're there to get an education- both academic and nonacademic. so in my humblest opinion maybe you should look to diversify your studying habits.

Sometimes plain rote memorization works for everyone but sometimes you could get the same material into your head quicker by doing practice problems... etc. It's good you have the diligence and work ethic to study so hard but don't burn yourself out. You're probably a sophomore right?

While you might be offended by your roommate's comment, cuz she really doesn't know what it's like to be you. She could also be worried about you. Maybe you deserve a quick break. Have a little me time or hell read a book for the fun of it for once.

I think the best way to approach being pre med is to not think like one. Don't think your life has to be any different cuz you're doing this "premed thing".

If you're committed to what you want to do, you have to make some sacrifices. That's just the way it is. It is possible to go out and study in the same day, but it doesn't work like that for some people. If you study, then go out and drunk, everything that you studied goes zoop.... right out of your head.

Last year, i hated my roomate. If you want to know how bad she was, do a search for worst roomates or something like that. But she also told me I was too much of a nerd for studying too much, so I just started going to the library (mostly because I didn't want to smell her) and I would come back, tell her I was out somewhere, say at a party or something. She was none the wiser, and I never got another nerd crack.

You really are superwoman. I'd die trying to do that. How much sleep do you get, and is it at regular hours?

3-6 hours is a lot. i dunno if i even study that much in a week. i'm not gonna try to sound like some genius who doesn't need to study but the one thing i do is always go to class and pay attention... i consider that my studying for the day. i think many neurotic premeds go to class and try to write down and/or record every word the professor is saying without bothering to understand it. paying attention and thinking about the work while sitting in class saves me a lot of time studying and allows me to do the things i like, everyday... work out, hang out with friends etc....

you only live once so you might as well prioritize how you wanna live.

oh, and to the person taking 3478234832 neuro classes.... holy crap!!

Keep in mind that people have different learning styles. It sounds like you're blessed enough to be an aural learner, that is, you can listen to lectures and retain everything you hear. I go to every single class as well, but I don't necessarily retain all of the ideas until I read them on my own later on. That doesn't mean that I study all that much, it just means I cram a lot as a result of procrastination 😎 I sometimes wish I had the focus to sit and study for at least an hour every single day, but I study out of necessity, as in right before exams. I admire people who have the drive to study that much. In the end, we are all dorks. At least people who ever get anywhere in life. So what? Be proud! 😉
