Ok so I’ve posted very dramatic posts before but seriously this is my last one and I’m just looking for some advice because this is in fact the last year I will be have medical school on my mind.

Graduated Northwestern 2016 with very ****ty GPA (depression/anxiety).
Did a year of postbacc sciences with a 4.0.
Believe my science is around 3.3-3.4 but it’s been awhile since I’ve checked or have known.

Then I worked as a CRC at Northwestern Memorial then moved to work as a CRC at Emory (met a guy).

Did lots of small lab research stuff while at Northwestern. Worked in a core lab. Volunteered translating in a free clinic and hospital. Volunteered at a pet shelter and about to start that up here. Some small things I’m sure I’m missing... exec in a club.

Just was given 2 months before funding ends at my current job which scares me but was also a great wake up call. It’s really now or never. I have the MCAT books but it’s always terrified me. I know I’m capable. I’ve already applied internally to other CRC jobs.

Questions:

What do I do if I don’t get another CRC job (I need insurance, but I also need time to study). Moving closer to Atlanta is an option but moving close won’t save me much with the traffic.
Should I apply 2020?
Any advice?

Thank you!

Your MCAT score is the x-factor for a 2020 cycle. Nobody will be able to advise you as to whether you should apply until you have numbers to share.

I don't know how to advise you on your work situation. You'll just need to work a job that pays the bills and allows you to obtain insurance. It might not be medically related, that's OK. This sounds like it's a stressful time for you, so please take care.

Thanks, I’m just worried because it took a few (3) months for me to get this job when I moved out here. And I applied at lots of places so I’m a bit worried. The dude I moved out here for should just put a ring on it so I can get coverage. Just kidding.

People have married/entered into domestic partnerships for worse reasons. And you may consider reaching out to Northwestern to see if they'd rehire you there if you were willing to move back.

If you are still struggling with any mental health issues, it is very critical you maintain insurance or access to affordable mental health care (e.g., sliding fee therapists). Employment insecurity is a very real factor in mental health problems, and you don't want to be messing around with that - even if you're doing well today - as you enter MCAT studies and a potential medical school application.

I’d have better luck with Emory as they have to help me find a new job more than Northwestern would. I’ll ride it out for now. I applied to lots of the open positions as soon as I found out and they’re all still under review which is a good thing.

It’s a very sucky situation.. who knew a Biology degree was worthless?
