Hey guys...

Just want to know my shot at getting in.

US Medical school.
Mid 220s Step 1.
Solid EM SLORs x4.
6 total interviews so far (3 from rotation sites, 3 from invites thus far).
Published EM paper recently, President of EMIG x 2 years, other volunteer and work experience.
Honors and High Pass at 2 EM rotations, last one ongoing.
Honors in Anesthesia.
Honors in several M1 year classes.
No red flags.
Applied to 37 programs.

Only problem is that I passed all my 3rd year clerkships and thus received a 4th quartile ranking. I was never in trouble of failing... I suppose my grades were always right at the border of highpass and pass. Evals were solid, but I guess I just never figured out how to truly "wow" residents in general, I suppose I didn't do above and beyond the work that was assigned to me. I learned this towards the end and hence my 4th year clerkship grades improved. 🙂

What do you think? Will this class rank of mine be a seriously bad thing and diminish my chances greatly?

Thanks guys.

96% chance of matching this year. 98% next year when you apply to 60 programs.

Thanks!

So I just need to be able to explain my crappy class rank during interviews right? I understand EM is not a field like ortho where class rank and AOA are what makes or breaks a candidate.

I read that EM SLORs, EM grades, Step1, and EM interest/activities count quite a bit... hoping that's true.

🙂

Anyone else with some insight or comments?

Before this thread gets out of hand.....Baggend, relax! You've got a solid application and if you do a search you'll find threads with tons of people posting similar (or worse) applications who matched at great programs. You'll be fine as long as you don't screw up the interviews.

Now proceed with the Fatty!

Yawn....

Give me an F

Take care,
Jeff

Sorry for not searching though.... 🙁.

Now this is not a FMF post. For reals, I just received my step 2CK and got a 201 🙁. I got a 205 on STEP 1 so my goal of getting a higher score on step 2 went down the drain. My 3rd year rotations are pretty much all B+ with the exception of Family Medicine in which I got an A. Anyway, now I'm concern about my chances of matching into EM ,specially on the west coast. I submitted my ERAS on sept 4th and applied to 30 programs. Should I apply to another 10 more programs? I am planning on releasing my STEP 2 CK scores since I don't think it will make that big of a difference. Does anyone think otherwise?

Sorry, but I still think you deserve the Fatty, maybe more so than the OP. Info about board scores is more accessible than that about class rank. People with your Step I score had a match rate of 91%. Those with your step II score had a 87% match rate on average, whereas those with unknown scores had a 95% match rate. Thus, if you believe these numbers, you should not release your Step II score - then again, does the 8% matter? The important thing is you have a high match rate with that board score no matter how you slice it, but if it worries you - don't release it, though I'm sure showing you passed is helpful. I don't know why you'd need 40 programs....

Releasing your step II score has always been a "controversial" topic. But the truth is, with your step 1 score, you may get asked whether you took step 2. And if I remember correctly, they will know that you have and probably excpected that you would have. Be prepared to ask why you didn't release your score, and be prepared to be asked what your score actually was. Unfortunately, this scenario can actually end up working against you because you essentially had something to "hide." I'm in the release your score camp and be ready to explain why there was a lack of improvement. I think the honesty route will go much further than trying to hide something from any program that offers you an interview.

Thank you for your reply and the same goes to Hard24get;however, as I said on my post I am planning on releasing my scores because I do not think it will make a big diference. I was just wondering if I should apply to more programs?

If you have 6 interview offers why not post them so others can see who is sending out offers?

FAQ link. And, you should talk to an advisor at your program for a real answer, since they will have a better sense of how someone from your school with your qualifications has done. Same goes for the OP.

here is an old thread on this
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=381840

none of us can tell you what to do or if making choice A vs B right now will ultimately decide if you get a spot, hence all the FMF. i can tell you i took mine early, my score dropped, it sucked, but i did fine. i think the best part of me taking and releasing the scores is that i didnt have the thought of this test still out there i had to take, and i didnt have to answer any "did you take it? when are you going to? why didnt you release your scores?". the west coast hates me and i got no replies for med school or residency, so i cant help you there lol. i would say do whatever is going to make you the most relaxed, because life is too short to geek out over such a little thing for such a long time

That soun ds like a good idea;however, I do not have a formal advisor. My school does not have an emergency medicine academic department nor does it have an EM residency. I have done everything on my own. Since I am doing an away rotation right now I guess I'll ask some of the people around here. Once again, thanks!

Based on my interpretation of what an adviser told me, you should go ahead and release the Step 2 score. It may be lower than your Step 1, but it's comparable and it proves you passed. The impression I got in my meeting was that some programs show preference to applicants who have already passed the exam because there's nothing hanging in the balance when it comes time for them to rank you. In other words, they'll rank those who have already passed ahead of some who haven't taken it to ensure they get candidates who are qualified and ready to train on July 1. May or may not be true.
