Hey guys
FIRSTLY i apologize for the long post... i realize i rambled but i really need some advice for my situation... +app deadlines for masters are soon! so i need to make some final decisions here
Ok getting right to it, here is my situation
Im from Canada, I applied this cycle, applied widely and to private school etc, and did not get in
I had oGPA 3.43, sci 3.4, non sci 3.6 and bcp 2.73, DAT 20/20/20
I took some courses this past summer, that did not go well and will have to re-take two prereq courses (D's)... I am not going to get into it but it was a very tough summer to say the least... with the worst news of my life with regards to a diagnosis of a family member
Anyway, by the end of this year my BCP will now be lower like 2.3-5ish, by oGPA will be about 3.4 still as will my science (kin major) and non sci will be 3.8
Next year I can either do a informal post bacc or 1 year masters
i need to bring up my BCP sepcifically... and i did the calculations if i get straight 4's in 6 more fresh courses + the 2 retakes, then it will be a 3.0 next year... not sure if this is even sufficient
Im not sure what to do next year- if a masters would be to my benefit as a seperate GPA OR add more undergrad courses
Problem is the only 1 year masters avail to me is not Bio or Chem... so not sure if my BCP would even be improved... but atleast i would have it under my belt... not sure what looks better, the low 3 BCP (assuming i make all 4's) and 3.5 OR 3.4 and 2 point something BCP with a new graduate GPA (projected 3.9-4)... is there a significant difference to schools
I was thinking of starting the masters in sept 11, applying June 2012 and as i wait (the time lag, year off, in between) i can take undergrad courses THEN, if need be?
What do you guys think? or should i do it the other way around and just do undergrad and hope for the best (stats will improve slightly - BCP 3, overall 3.5). THEN masters if necessary... im trying to keep in mind how and when grades will be available for AADSAS and schools...
Also, im guessing i should skip this cycle? (June '11) since nothing improved really... or should i apply just in case and then give fall grades in next year? or is that a waste of time, $ and effort
Lastly, I wrote the DAT in August '10, i understand they are valid for 2 years, so if i apply June 2012, im assuming it should still be valid?? even though the app cycle will breach the 2 year mark...
I have to say, I need the quickest most effective method to tackle my situation because... with the health of my family member i feel a little pressure... I want to get going with my life and make my family member proud... as well as graduate and settle down ASAP... start a family and all that... its kind of hard to explain but i am in a tough situation; though this is not the focus of the thread but is some background info that plays in
Thank you for any thoughtful input, it is appreciated

I'm going to have to disagree with the end of that last post. It is 100% possible to go from 2.3 to 4.0 in one term. It's all about how bad you want it. If you put the time and the effort in and make sure you don't let any material slip by you, I'm a firm believer that almost anyone can get a 4.0 especially in the sciences because as we all know it's a matter of right or wrong answer and a lot less of an individuals personal opinion of your work. The level of effort and work one person will have to put in may vary greatly from person to person but it's possible none the less.
So moral of the story is you are completely capable and I think schools look very favorably on it. I started my undergrad with similar stats about 2.5 years of around cgpa/sci 2.5 and one day woke up and realized what I needed to do and I did it. I pulled straight As til I graduated, and there was no real trend just a complete turn around. I applied pretty late in the cycle, have had one interview and two more coming up (and am also Canadian) so go for it. Maybe you could get a full summer semester and fall in and reapply for 2011-2012 Best of luck!
Hey Miek, I completely agree that it's 100% possible and people do it. All I was saying was to be careful assuming it's a done deal when planning out your application approach.
Thank you for your encouraging words... yeah i know what you mean, and i AM confident I can pull those 4's if i really focus (this year so far i have 4.07 AADSAS GPA) and i plan to remain dedicated and work hard
Anyway... Now what im wondering now is...
would you suggest i apply this June (even with the LOW BCP @ the end of this year) since by the FALL academic update, things should be looking better (will have new spring and fall grades)
This is very true and exactly what I was thinking, but was still curious about other options... I guess i kind of wanted to feel like im putting a year towards something certain / i AM interested in the masters program... but i definately see what your saying! Thank you... i can see where your coming from and was seriously considering just that - an intense bio courseload!
QUESTION: would you suggest i apply this June (even with the LOW BCP @ the end of this year) since by the FALL academic update, things should be looking better (will have new spring and fall grades)
????????
