revelation at last:- scored 235 on step 1.. aiming for radiology.. medical graduate from Bulgaria.. Bulgarian citizen.. any comments on my aspirations? meaning, should I lower them ? how do programs like im, dermato, path, anesthesiology treat this score? if I want radio, how much minimum would I require in step 2- ck & cs, + step 3 with this step 1 score??

TMI, I know! be brutally honest 😉

derm is absolutely out of the question, but all of the others seem doable on various levels. Check out the http://www.nrmp.org/ to look up stats for each of those specialties.

I would say you are strong for IM, Anes, ans Path. Rads you are right there...maybe a little low.

Derm.....possible but not likely....need closer to 245-250.

If you want Rads, just have all the other things in a row and do well on Step 2 like 240+.

But, your Step 1 score is not a killer for Rads.

The whole FMG thing makes Derm a near impossibility.

Sorry, I missed that someone how this am. Yeah, forget it.

and Rads will be much tougher too. Still ok for the others. Anes might not be as strong. Depends on how broad you apply.

u got my hopes up for a while 🙁 .. anyway, what do you think abt path? do i still need LORs and research experience for it with this score, provided i get around the same scores in rest of the steps?

Path, I dont know as much about. From what I know, your scores are fine.

I believe you will still need a LOR regardless in the field you plan on applying to.

I do know that many have mentioned Paths having a problem finding jobs once they are done. I would stay away from that field myself. Check out their forum.

Radiology isn't as competitive as it used to be.

Only 74% of radiology is US seniors. Only 94.8% was filled (nearly 5% unfilled).

Compare to the other fields you mentioned:

US senior/Filled% 2013
Rads: 74%/95%
IM: 50%/99.4%
EM: 82%/99.8%
Anes: 70%/96%
Path: 45%/96.4%
Derm: 86%/98%

Also, I haven't seen any average Step 1 scores since the 2011 charting outcomes (a lot has happened since then). Maybe someone else has NRMP data published since then? Unless they do, I don't think you can use the 2011 # as the competitiveness has taken a slight nosedive. The two %'s above are very telling in competitiveness of the specialty, other than average Step 1 score which I've yet to see recent data.

I think a lot of people are judging the competitiveness of radiology based on a pre-2011 view and not the last few years. The reality is, is someone is willing to train anywhere - radiology is a rather easy match (I.e. a 225 Step 1 score would have a great shot at matching - e.g. > 90% chance).

No offense to anyone who posted in this thread but as kedrin mentioned...

NRMP data >>> anyones opinion in this thread

http://www.nrmp.org/data/chartingoutcomes2011.pdf

Enjoy.

Agreed, but again - the 2011 data is far from what happened the last 2 years.

To give an example of just a few

US senior/Filled% 2011
Rads: 78.9%/96.6
EM: 78.9%/99.7%
Anes: 79.8%/97.5%

edit: IMG changes the game a bit and may make it more difficult.

There isn't going to be another charting outcomes. The NRMP and NBME separated.

But those don't look like huge changes to me. I doubt the average for any average step has shifted more than 5 points in 2 years.

5% change in US seniors is a lot. Also 5% unfilled is a lot. That's 50 spots that are going unfilled by IMGs or AMGs. No one can really give any good estimates on Step scores at this point, especially if you have 8% unfilled. If someone said the average dropped 10 or 5 points, unless we have data (as you said above) it's not even worth discussing. On the otherhand, when you have that many unfilled slots, there's a good chance for any average Step score (~225) to fill those slots.
