this doesn't affect me in the slightest - but I was surprised that there was a question regarding this whole ridiculous process that I hadn't heard the answer bantered around sometime...

I have a friend that was accepted to some good programs and made his choice (still is on a couple waitlists) by the 15th - and then promptly deferred that acceptance until next year. Is he eligible to consider one of his waitlist schools if/when he gets a phone call? I don't know much about deferring - maybe they lock you up somehow or by doing so you forfeit other possibilities.

ok, I am not positive, but I am nearly so about this question. If I'm wrong let me know.
Yes, he is still able to consider his waitlists. He will still have to promptly withdraw from the other school after any waitlist acceptance. However, waitlisted students are rarely offered the chance to defer acceptance unless they are accepted relatively early in the waitlist season, so if he gets a call in July, he's going to have to decide if he wants to go to the waitlist school this year or the deferred school next year.

that makes sense about his options- about the opportunity to defer as a waitlister... is that "waitlist" tag going to stick around until school starts, or is that an asterisk that will accompany you through the match?
