Hey, does myoglobin transport protein at all? I was under the impression that it does, until I got a TPR question wrong. Their explanation is:

"While both hemoglobin in blood and myoglobin in muscle can bind oxygen, only hemoglobin actually transports O2. Myoglobin simply stores O2 to be used by the muscle cell."

So, myoglobin doesn't transport O2 at ALL? 😕

Thanks.

Hemoglobin is found in red blood cells and is used to transport oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. It binds tightly to oxygen in the lungs (where the PO2 is high) and it releases oxygen in the tissues (where PO2 is low). Myoglobin is found in muscle (I'm not sure if it's found elsewhere also) and binds oxygen very tightly; it releases oxygen at very low PO2. Also, myoglobin isn't found in red blood cells, so it cannot transport oxygen.
