N95 vs P100

An engineer friend gave me a 3m half respirator with new p100 filters, recommending i use it instead of an n95.. For protection against airborne aerosolization, this feels to be superior. Not comparing with a papr. Should I use this instead of an n95 for situations that I don't use a papr?

Yes, per my understanding and what’s available on the web, the p100 is superior. It provides 99.97% filtration of particles compared to 95% of the n95.
It is also reusable and able to be cleaned

Couldn’t find any when I looked today, other than some $15 Chinese knockoff counterfeit 3M “respirators” on Amazon

Try local manufacturing companies, online is pretty poorly supplied, but a couple of the local places had some. One of them even just donated a bunch of stuff when they found out I was an anesthesiologist.

Yah call local hardware, painting, mold cleaning companies, pest/rodent control companies. Lots of different companies have tons for their employees

Classic "gas" masks mainly use activated charcoal to adsorb or inactivate gases or chemical vapors. This mechanism is separate from the particulate filtration function of a respirator.

N95 = Not oil resistant, 95% particulates filtered
P100 = Perfectly oil resistant, 99.8% (100%) particulate filtered
R100 = Somewhat oil Resistant, 99.8% (100%) particulate filtered

The oil resistance doesn't make a difference in healthcare so all will work for our needs. Those that are R or P oil resistant have much shorter expiration dates on them compared to N, probably because they are being used in the environments with these oil based compounds that will degrade the masks. Ergo, for our purposes, treat all of them as equivalent and should all have essentially no expiration date (N masks expire when difficult to breathe through or visibly soiled).
