Hello all,

I'm applying to MD schools this June, and am getting married in the second half of June. I plan on eventually changing my name to my SO's last name, but I'm unsure of the best time to do this. I'm worried that if I change my name during the app process I might slip through the cracks and cause extra hassle to the schools I apply to.

Option 1: This is what I was originally planning on: No name change on my marriage license, go through the app process using my maiden name, change name after acceptance to med school.

Option 2: Submit AMCAS in early June with my new married name even though I technically haven't changed it yet. Is this premature?

It would be better to change your name after the cycle since your previous records from transcripts to tax returns etc will all be under your current name. It probably would be fine either way but just to save yourself any unnecessary headaches, I'd change it afterwards. You lose nothing by changing it later.

As someone who changed their name before their app cycle, do it afterwards because it just makes everything harder. I had to change my name with the AAMC and get things notarized and it was kind of a hassle. Congratulations on the marriage!
