I have been told not to use specific Dr.'s names as it shows you understand privacy but in telling a story you can assign generic names to keep a story straight.

That's my opinion, but I could very well be wrong. I mentioned doctors' name in my PS, but left patients simply as "patient." Besides, they wrote me a LOR so it's good to have that connection.

Seconded. I did the same. HIPAA confidentiality protects patients' privacy. So definitely don't include patients' names. But I've had two admissions directors look at my personal statement and neither seemed to have any problem with using the dentist's name with whom I volunteer.
