Alright so. I did a dumb gamble I didn't tell anyone about that paid off tremendously, so I think I might actually be ready to apply next cycle (2020) instead of my intended cycle (2021). I was originally going to take the MCAT this August but in a fit of mania (hello bipolar II) registered for and took it last month instead. Just got scores back last week and praise all that is holy I do not need to retake.

Here we go... sorry this is long!
  • GPA:
    • Undergrad: 2.9 (graduated 8 years ago, cared a little too much about partying my way through college)
    • Postbac: 4.0
    • cGPA: 3.35
    • sGPA: 3.75 (both AMCAS and AACOMAS)
    • Will be taking upper division bio courses during the 2019-2020 year to hopefully swing that cGPA into 3.4, which is very doable :)
    • Non-medical related masters: 4.0
  • MCAT: 518 (!!!) - 130 CP / 130 CARS (!!) / 127 BB / 131 PS
  • State of residence: Massachusetts
  • Ethnicity: Asian female (way ORM)
  • Undergrad: HYPSM
  • Clinical experience:
    • 4 years work experience as a mental health clinician (inpatient, residential, PHP)
    • ~100 volunteer hours at local hospital (will continue volunteering this next year)
  • Research experience:
    • 4 posters at national conferences
    • 1 manuscript in review, 1 in prep
  • Shadowing experience:
    • ~60 hours across peds, onco, geriatrics, IM (is this enough?)
  • Non-clinical volunteering:
    • Crocheting blankets/hats for the homeless - thousands of hours, been doing this since I was 14
    • 30 hours arts outreach for city ballet company
    • 50 hours volunteering at local food bank (no longer doing this)
    • 50 hours volunteering at women's shelter (continuing this)
    • 100 hours volunteering at a cat shelter (I'm a crazy cat lady and not ashamed of it, sorry)
    • Lead free support groups and mentorships for individuals recovering from eating disorders
  • ECs:
    • Started and ran a dance company; also participated in a few others at a semipro level
    • Director of a city-wide arts festival
    • I'm... in the Junior League >___>
    • Currently compiling an anthology of eating disorder recovery stories, grant-sponsored by a prominent leader in ED treatment
  • Honors/awards:
    • Best poster award at national conference
    • National fellowship for service to underserved youth
  • Other stuff:
    • I'm a three-time career changer. Previously worked in finance, then in PR/marketing, now in mental health. I'm scared this will work against me because it will seem like I can't stick with something long term.
    • Why medicine (the real reason, not the fancy PS reason): scope of practice is limited in as a masters-level clinician. I work in an inpatient facility for individuals with eating disorders, and want to continue doing work in areas that bridge the biopsychosocial realm - things like addiction psychiatry, eating disorders, somatic medicine, psychotic disorders. It is nigh impossible to get a full picture of these disorders without understanding the underlying medical conditions. Also, I want to prescribe =P
    • Have lived experience with mental health issues, and am generally very open about this (if you Google me you can find some of my writings and articles). I don't plan on including it in my PS but if brought up during interviews, I won't shy away from talking about it.
And now the schools!

As you can see, there's a lot. I'd rather not apply (to save $$$) if they are outside of my range. The original plan was to apply DO only, but with my MCAT score I've decided to reach a little further. I'm scared I'm aiming too high, but I think with 3.4/3.7/518 and a reinvention story (thanks @Goro!), I'm slowly finding some self confidence :') Any and all feedback welcome!

Congrats on the MCAT! If your undergrad is one of the two on there known for grade deflation (MIT, Princeton), I wouldn't sweat it too much. I think you're in good shape regardless.
