Hey guys,

I'm trying to narrow down my application list. I went through the ADEA guide and narrowed it down to 15 schools that I want to apply to based on OOS friendliness, average stats of admitted students, Pre-reqs. I wanted to know if I should remove/add any schools based on my stats or non-traditional status, or anything I should consider about the schools on my list?

DAT results: AA - 21/TS - 21/OC - 23/GC - 21/BIO - 20/RC- 20/QR - 19/PA - 23 \
oGPA: 3.4
sGPA: 3.5
Non-Traditional

  1. MARQUETTE (In State)
  2. CREIGHTON
  3. UPENN
  4. MEHARRY
  5. BOSTON
  6. TUFTS
  7. TOURO
  8. CASE WESTERN
  9. ROSEMAN
  10. U MICHIGAN
  11. U CONNETICUT
  12. U PITTSBURG
  13. U DETROIT
  14. TEMPLE
  15. LECOM
Maybes:
NOVA, LOMA LINDA, A.T. STILL

Most of the other schools that are out of state friendly or I'm competitive stats wise I was missing a pre-req (usually Anatomy)

Is 15 schools too many to apply for?

Uconn and Umich will be tough.

You think so? Based on the the guide stats for enrollees I’m close to their average GPA and DAT scores (at least for U mich). Should I replace with one of my maybes or not to those at all?

I applied last cycle with similar stats, although I'm also currently doing a Master's degree. I am non-traditional as well. I got interviews at Tufts, Touro, Nova, LECOM, MOSDOH (AT Still Kirksville) Midwestern Glendale, and UTSD in Houston (Texas res). So I got 7 interviews, went to 5, and got 4 acceptances.

I didn't apply to some of those on your list but just throwing in my experience 🙂

Want to echo what was previously mentioned, U Mich/U Conn will be very difficult and I think you're wasting money applying to that program. It's a really stellar program but if you're going to apply OOS then you really need a 3.8 cGPA+ and 21 DAT +. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I certainly don't think it's worth the risk for the amount of money it's going to cost you to apply there. Also I would add AT Stills.

I had Uconn interview/acceptance in my cycle with 3.6/3.6 and 20/21 NY resident. What is it, an extra $40? Never know.

I'd take out Touro and add in UB. I'd take out Boston for Arizona/ Midwestern

Thanks for the advice, any particular reason I should take out Touro? I don't have anatomy pre-req, so both midwesterns are out for me.

Any particular reason? I see that their OOS percentage is 40%, which is pretty good, but I felt like I was lacking in stats for MD.

Thanks for sharing! I'll add NOVA to my list.

Didn't know some schools started requiring AP. That sucks. Seems like just another hoop to jump through. My AP did nothing for me besides being a grade booster.

Touro is just too new for me. I would rather apply somewhere with a more proven system. Maybe ATstill/Nova

I think a lot of schools are starting to prefer anatomy although they don't require it. You should try to take it over the summer and apply to Midwestern IL especially since it'll be close to your home.

Your stats seem average enough to not get disqualified based solely on those. The 40% OOS for a state school is pretty high though. Some years it seems that it's actually closer to 50%

Gotcha. I will add it to my list. Thanks!

That's based on the ADEA guide. There were plenty of other schools with high OOS percentages and cheaper tuition that I didn't look much further than the guide for the initial narrowing down of the schools.

I wish I could take Anatomy because it would open up my choices more, but I travel every single week for work and it seems like weekend anatomy classes don't really exist where I live (maybe because its considered an upper level science class? I'm not sure). Based on some stuff I read on here online anatomy classes don't really count either.

Good luck. Also why not add NYU since you are adding schools like Tufts to the list?

Thanks! I decided to not consider NYU because its the most expensive school out there as well as the gigantic class size (350-400) makes me wary of them.

Class size is definitely very different from every other school, but i would argue that some of the schools you have listed are very similar to NYU in terms of loans you'll need for school and living expenses.

For sure, but the class size just wigs me out. Someone wrote here that you should apply to schools you can see yourself going to, and not just apply based on numbers and getting in SOMEWHERE ASAP. Maybe I am being too cocky about it but even if I only got into NYU I'm not sure I would really take them up on it. Dental school a huge investment so I want to make sure I am happy somewhere.

Plus I am too much of a country boy to handle a school in downtown Manhattan on top of all that.

You're not making a mistake if you feel like you wouldn't be happy there 🙂
