Does anyone have information on the Nassau University Medical Center anesthesiology program on Long Island? There is nothing on SDN and the program's own website is rather skimpy.

Nassau is a busy county hospital, which could be great for training. I know it's not a top program, but I'm curious if it's solid, shaky, or one to completely avoid.

I would give you "shaky" at best, but with a heavy bend toward "avoid". They are reportedly at repeated risk of being shut down (not the program, but the hospital); they are the only hospital for many of the folks of Nassau County, so that seems unlikely. They somehow have a "0.5 year" cycle approval - I didn't even know that was possible - but that's as close to probation as you can get.

Good luck with it. There are other programs in the area. Do you HAVE to be near NYC?

really? they just inked a big deal with an offshore school for clinical rotations. But I have heard the hospital is shady

Thanks dc. Plan to return to NY as a resident or attending, but I'll drop Nassau from the list. I'm not saying that I plan to waltz into a residency spot at Mt. Sinai or Columbia, but I'd rather not go to a low tier program in the NY area. Nassau County is also the pits IMO (for what you get for your money).

I'm not the world's expert, and I admit I could be wrong. But, for sure, AT LEAST twice in the four years I lived on Long Island, there were debates about whether or not to close NUMC because of it's profound financial difficulties. For the other stuff I posted, you can look it up on FREIDA.

As far as nice things to say about the place: they take care of a LOT of the Nassau Country trauma, so that aspect of education will likely be very strong.

Hello...

I was wondering, what about a program makes it go on probation? Is it the lack of patients, the lack of pass rate?

thanks

I grew up in Nassau County. Since 1980-something, they've been talking of closing that hospital. Locally, it has a really shady (for lack of a better word) reputation. It is not the only hospital in Nassau by any stretch, LIJ, North Shore, Winthrop in Mineola, Plainview and Syosset and a bunch just over the border in Suffolk too, like Huntington. It does not have a good reputation and I cannot imagine employers being impressed with that program or place. I cannot imagine they get cool and complex cases with Hearts surely going St. Francis and LIJ and peds going to Schneiders... just my opinion as a premed though.

As per classmates from my school doing core rotations there this will be the last year the anesthesia program there will participate in the match. They are shutting down the anesthesia residency program there from what I understand due to significant $ problems, although I don't know enough to figure out how this would save that much money. Contact them to verify but I'm almost certain that this is the case.

when I was there for prelim medicine interview, they were rebuilding the ER, and the PD said the hospital just won a class action lawsuit against the tobacco companies and had a ton of cash.

I was looking at the match stats and didn't see an anesthesia listing for nassau. Did this program already shut down??? so is the rumor about them closing down the residency for real??? thats too bad... I wanted to stay in NY and less spots = more competition... ugh!

Is there a way to actually verify this since Freida still lists this program
