I was part of the ADA study for the new format of the national boards part 1.
As I promised in an earlier post, I will share my experiences.

First of all, I took the NDB p1 in paper format in July, however I don?t have my scores yet (per part of the study) I took the new boards on computer last week.

There were 6 students in my class who participated in this study. The test set-up is basically the same as when we all took the DAT, register with the ADA, they send you a registration letter and number in the mail. Then you set up a time an date to take the test. Same thing as the DAT, you call the testing center directly and they tell you what specific info to do.

Got to the testing center early in the morning, checked in showed my two ID forms and gave them a ink fingerprint and was all set to go.

The test was on the computer. You basically click on the button with the answer you pick. Then click on the next button. You can also click a ?mark? button which will give you the option to review those questions when your done with a section. Once your done with each 100 question section you can review all those questions easy by clicking on a specific number in a list, if you haven?t completed a 100 question section you can?t review easy without clicking the back arrow a ton of times. Hopefully they will change this.

The questions were not the same as the paper test I took in July. They were much different, in fact they were much easier then the paper version. There were actually pictures on the test and the questions reminded me of some of the older released tests, not like the harder 2003 paper version with no pictures. (not sure if they were real questions for the future or just for the study, but I bet they are real, because I recognize a few from the 2003 test, but only that)

Taking the test took much less time then the paper version, and there was a questionnaire at the end of the test, no doubt for the study.

Much quieter, as I was given a head set and the computer room was very small with only a few people in it.

If anybody has any questions, please let me know.

It is then almost same format as computer based Part II.
Does anyone have clue when ADA planning to introduce computer based Part I ?

I even don't understand rationale behind paper based NBDE I, when all the exams (NBDE II, USMLE I & II) of this standard are computer based since long time.
Is there any specific reason you aware of, for paper based part I ?
I would always prefer computer based exams , as they can be schedule as per candidates convinience, and results are available in short time.

I had contacted the testing center, and they have informed me that they will most likely begin administrating the computer version beginning of next year.

Thanks for sharing with us Marcus. I'm curious, which scores will be the valid ones to you? the paper or the computer ones?
when will you get your scores?

Thanks.

I have heard from the past that ADA will soon change the NBDE 1 format to a more case study approach. Much like USMLE 1 boards. Do you think they will emplement this when they switch to the computer format? Or do you think they will still stick to the old format for a little while?

I will be taking it in the summer of 2005 and I would hate to take the case study format. I do better on straight up facts, either you know it or not, type questions.

Thanks for responding!

I guess the best of the 2 scores wud be considered.

Marcusdds,

Wow, that's interesting, your experience seems to be a bit different than that of my roomates', who also took the computer version of the boards. She said it was actually a bit harder than the paper version.

Meggs,

My roommate told me that what the ADA is doing is that they are taking the best score of each SECTION of the paper and computer versions and using those scores as the individual's official score. Pretty neat deal if you ask me. The only problem is though, she thinks she won't really know which sections she did better on.

but thats a cool deal!!!!

yeah you get the average of the better scores if you actually did better, but I didn't on it becaue I didn't study and I just wanted my money to do the survey. But I gave them good feedback so it was worth it to them. As for my scores, I got them back actually today, got a 93 overall, one section messed me up!
anyway have a great day everyone and let me know if you have any questions

Hi Marcus,

what are the books u referred in preparing for the part 1 exam, and what material did u read for dental anatomy?

thanks,
itsme

I didn't really use any books, I basically used my class notes, read them over and over a few times.

Hi

i called the ADA in Dec and asked them to send me application for computerised exame part 1 NDB

so far they sent nothing

I also try to apply to the exame through their online application but it never opens ???

Any of you knows when will computerised exame starts , i heard in February but not sure if i am correct

Regards
Sherif

Sherif, I've sent them three emails requesting an application for the computerized version and I've yet to hear anything.

I've spoken NUMEROUS times to the NBDE people on the phone, and they've always said that the online application would be available "next week". Like you, I've discovered that the link on the ADA website doesn't link to anything yet.

Time and time again I've heard that they will begin to offer it in February, but it seems to be getting too close to that time to begin it, since registration isn't even being accepted yet.

I'm getting anxious about this one.

Hi

Do any of you know if the computerised part 1 will be case

studies based questions or regular questions ?

NDBE part1 July
Hi,
Im also preparing for part1 exams ,as I was browsing the " Dental Forum" ,I found this posting by one of the students (Yah-E) about the format changes of Part1 exams. The written exam format ..is that going to change too and include case studies????
Can anyone shed some light on this??

NBDE Part I Update
--------------------------
According to the recent issue of ASDA News, the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinatins (JCNDE) is changing the cost of NBDE Part I, its format, and make it computerized at Prometric Test Center like the DAT!

Current NBDE Part I:
Cost: $125
Format: straight forward questions (memorization and regurgitate facts), four distinctive sections
Availability: twice/year (July and December)

Starting as early as early fall this year (~September 2003):
Cost: $100
Format: straight forward questions (memorization and regurgitate facts), four distinctive sections
Availability: anytime you want on the computer

Starting as early as summer 2004:
Cost: more than $100, but less than $125
Format: Pilot COMPREHENSIVE (interdisciplinary situations and case studies to test caandidates abilities to apply information in clinical settings), sounds like the USMLE Step I format and no more four distinctive sections
Availability: anytime you want on the computer

Make long story short, I'm glad I'm taking this thing this July before all this changes are being made! For those of you in the Class of 2006, by the time you take the Part I after your second year in 2004, you may be the first to tackle the "COMPREHENSIVE" format on the NBDE Part I!

I'm truly sorry to hear that, my friends!

Does anybody know if the computerized version is going to be adaptive...that is if you answer a question correct, the following question gets harder and if you answer it wrong, the next one gets a little easier? Or is it like the DAT where the questions for individual exams are predetermined? Hopefully it's the latter but anybody have an idea? Thanks.

I called ADA and they said application for compt part 1 will be available next week

and exame will start in March

hope they keep their word

Regards

i hope the computer exame will not be case studies

but author dental decks email me that information you need to know remain the same regardless of the exame format

A good book called USMLE step one board simulator by Williams and wilkins publisher

the book is case studies

but it is big for our dental subjects but helpful

if you have time you can look questions case studies in basic sceinces in this book

Regards

Hi

Is there a seperate application for computer based NBDE I??
Has anyone got the appli for computer based NBDE I?
All this is so confusing
😕

Application for NBDE Part 1 is available on www.ada.org NOW.

It's available now, you can register for computer version of the NBDE Part 1 now.

Thanks Yah-E for the quick reply.
Do you know if ADA sends the application by mail too like for the NBDE II ?? Please reply if you know..
Thanks.

please calm down friends, lets not panic..
all to first,u can download the application for CBT,and secondly,if u can always ask ADA to send u one,CBT exam is not going to start before march anyways..
and to learn a little better and to adapt urself to CBT,ada is offering a disc worth $15 ,u can try that, and prepare urselves better for the CBT format.
and as far i ve come to know about the questions style, those 're going to be based on clinical applications, but not comprehensive..that is not going to happen before september.
i hope it helps.
so, lets relax,&get back to our books&do great.👍

The CBT exam will not be available until May of this year. The ADA is still saying that the online registration form for the CBT version of the NBDE I will be available next week.

Don't worry too much about it, since the earliest date you can schedule the exam is early May anyway.

Hi MArcuss im a Foreign tranied Dentist and I am interested in Knowing how are the NBDE 1 exams are evaluated do you know ?? Can anyone answer this Question , I have recieved inforamtion saying something about a Curve but not really sure now that the NBDE (CBT, Computer Based Test) are really evaluated now thhat only few people take the exams in any specific dateand before it was only taken two times a year

Thank you for your time any if anyone can answer please Reply back
