Hey everyone,
I got a package in the mail from National Dean's List. I have never heard of it so I'm a little skeptical. The letter reads:

You have been selected to receive honorary award recognition by having your biography published in the 26th Annual Edition of The National Dean's List, 2002/2003....etc.

Anyone heard of this? They claim there are no financial obligations but, you have to send $15.00 to have your picture published. Otherwise, there would only be biographical information and no picture.

Anyone know if this is legit?

I just got the same package too. I don't know much about it, other than what they say in the letter and that one of my sisters got in it last year. I want to believe that it is a real and authentic thing. I don't know why you are skeptical. I don't know how reputable it is. But, I assume being on there cannot hurt, or can it?😱

I got it for two years, but never really bothered getting the book. I think it might be more of a money-making scheme than anything. The criteria for selection aren't even very stringent. I had an advisor that used to nominate me for all sorts of things such as these, but I never ordered the books or paid the organizations any money. I also remember getting Who's Who for two or three years. It makes nice resume material though. 🙂

so does sending the information in esure you get into the book?
do you necessarily have to buy the book before hand of could you just wait to see if you made it in, then buy the book?

If you got a letter, you pretty much got the award. If you want your picture in the book, then you pay them the dough. I'll tell ya though, it'll be one little tiny picture in a big thick book. Not worth it, in my opinion. I just never thought much of it, since it didn't seem like a selective award to me.

That's why I never thought much of it. Can you imagine a dropout saying, "I was on the National Dean's List"?!!

This is great... I am still laughing at the Dean being "do it" and you turning down pi beta kappa! Too funny... They really shouldn't make you pay for it, but then again it is an honor. Congratulations!

i don't think it's a money making thing. you pay the one time fee and are a member for life. every few months you get a newsletter and are also eligible for scholarships they have. there are probably other opportunities as well, but i don't really pay attention 😛. oh yeah, and we had a nice luncheon/ceremony at my school for recipients and their families, so that was probably where most of my money went.

Phi Beta Kappa is really prestigious from what i know. Don't quote me but i think at duke only those students that get straight A's are eligible to be nominated.

No, you do not have to pay 15.00 bucks. the money is if you want your picture to be in there.

Several people at my college got that same letter. I would join, but not give them anything for the pic, or buy the book.

Yes, but it is optional. And, from what I remember the book cost like 65 bucks. Definatley not worth it, but hey it just something else you can stick on your CV.

Yeah. Who's Who was great in high school, but this time around I tossed the envelope away after I read the info. I would rather list true awards from my community & university than this false award given to me by people who don't know anything about me & my accomplishments. It is a money-making scheme that almost anyone can buy into.

It's the same company that put's on the Who's Who? and some sort of teachers list.

I have never actually made the U of NE's Dean's List (GPA of 3.1) but got nominated anyway. I was curious as to who nominated me so I called the NDL company and was told that Kaplan (the test people) did. About I'll I ever did for them is fill out an info card, I didn't even take their class.

No... phi beta kappa you can but on a resume and most people will be at least happy to see it... if not mildly impressed.

But these other things are total scams. 🙄
