Greetings:

I am an NAVY HPSP student and I am interested in further education after dental school. I am not interested in specializing, but I do wish to get additional education.

Does any one here have experience with the GPR or AEGD programs with the NAVY? Are there ample GPR positions available for those that desire one, or are they competitive and some students don't get accepted? Same question for the AEGD programs.

I look forward to hearing what others have experienced. Any ideas, advice or thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you in advance. -DM

Hello,

I am currently in the Navy, and I have intimate knowledge with both programs. I completed an AEGD several years ago. Unless you want to specialize in OMFS, do NOT go to a Navy GPR. In the Navy, the AEGD is the way to go for non-surgical types. GPR residents have an incredibly miserable schedule, with in-house call/etc, compared with the AEGDers, though they do get extra training in ACLS/anesthesia. GPR's don't do very much general dentistry. Actually, I'm prettty sure the AEGDers took out more teeth than the GPR residents, too. To reiterate, don't do a Navy GRP unless you want to pursue a career in OMFS!!!

Hope this helps.

Do you have any info on specializing in Endo through the Navy. I am an HPSP and this along with ortho (which is pretty impossible to get into) is what I am interested in. Thanks!

I agree for the most part. During dental school, I was interested in OMFS, but couldn't commit to it right out of dental school. GPR convinced me that it's what I want to do and gave me a good background for OMFS residency. At the same time, I did have 2 months of Endo and perio rotations with a bit of pedo OR cases added on here and there. OS rotation, well, that was an everyday thing. If you don't like to be on call every 3-4 nights, GPR in the military is NOT for you! My GPR program required in-house call every 4th night...

I appreciate the feedback and advice. Thank you!

So if I do want to do OMFS, then is a GPR the better choice or is AEGD still better? Will GPR be looked at more favorably for selection into OMFS or is this not the case (You did mention that AEGDers actually pulled more teeth)? Thanks!

GPR is better for you then.

If I eventually decide I'd like to do a perio specialty, would an AEGD be better than a GPR?
