After graduating dental school...will they let me specialize before serving the 4 years back.....how does this work?

I know Army does. That is you can go private residency then payback. (I had a buddy who did this).

It depends on what you want to specialize in. They will only do so if it is in an undermanned speciality. For instance, I know that OMFS is one that they will allow while Ortho is one they will not. You will have better luck in the military forums. Try running a search because I know I've seen this question somewhere before.

no, actually it doesnt matter what you specialize in..
you just have to get accepted to a prgm first.. and then you go to school, and instead of stipend get paid as LT. Then afterwards.. serve additional years navy paid in paying for that tuition.. 👍

This is incorrect on a couple of points.

1. If you are granted NADDS (NAVY ACTIVE DUTY DELAY FOR SPECIALISTS) status, you will not be compensated or add to your obligation. I think you are thinking of FAP, which is something you could take after getting NADDS, which would pay you, but also add to your payback.

2. The Navy is under no obligation to allow you to do a civilian residency and will only do so if it is in their best interest (ie. it is something that they need).

The Navy HPSP website is full of specific answers to these questions for those interested. The link is:

What weapons training does the Navy give Dentists? I've always heard that dentists/doctors/nurses/chaplains are all noncombatants so they get minimal, if any, combat training. It sure would stink to be on land somewhere and go toe to toe with an angry national and only have a high speed handpiece for defence. I suppose the same could be said of the Army and the Air Force.
