Hello,
I am graduating in 2014 and passed part 2 and part 3, however, I haven't passed part 1. I am retaking it in August. Has this happened to anyone? I am very distraught and need some advice. I don't think I am a good test taker, although I passed parts 2 & 3 the first time.
Please help.

you should have taken part 1 again immediately after having failed it, now you are further removed from that basic science material, so it will be harder. No choice but to knuckle down and review all of that material.

+1. You are in a seriously precarious situation. Buckle down and study, you have no other choice.

Don't worry you are not alone. I am in a similar situation. I was sure I had passed part 1 this time and I was so close (I literally failed by one point). However the pass/fail cutoff was 5% higher for the March 2014 part 1 exam vs. the March 2013 and August 2013 part 1 exams. Does anyone know why that is? Also does anyone know if the August 2014 pass/fail cutoff will be similar to the March 2014 cutoff?

I happens every once in a while to be honest! hell i just heard its common down in PR...class of 2015 only not even half the class passed boards 1...not even 1/3 did really....it was 1/6 of the class was capable of passing the boards

Doc4eyes, I've heard of this happening, so please don't feel alone. Yes, the situation is upsetting, but I would suggest working toward figuring what's kept you from performing well on N.B.E.O., I. Is it a particular subject? Are your marks low in very many areas, instead? Do you find yourself blanking during written examinations? Were you simply ill on the days of the test?

The proverb is, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again," but it's imbecilic to try again and again without first assessing the reasons for your initial failure. You need to understand why you did poorly, to enhance your odds of doing well the next time you take the exam, rather than leaving it up to chance.

Regarding practical ramifications, I do not believe any state optometry board will process your application for a license without your successfully completing all three parts of the N.B.E.O.'s exam. So, until this happens, you will be unable to begin generating income. Besides this, no, I don't think you'll be directly harmed in any way: once you have your doctorate and your license, I believe you will not often need to go into much more detail.

Applying for work, the topic might come up — it might not. Even if it rises, it may or mayn't be relevant to your potential employer. If you apply to complete a residency program, yes, I believe it could be an obstacle (but, few things are absolute impediments.)

If you'd like to talk, you're welcome to send a P.M. to me.

Best of luck.
