A 45-year-old woman remembers being sexually abused as a child by her older brother. She draws on her childhood experiences to express intense emotions in her work as an actor. This use of her childhood experiences is most illustrative of which of the following coping mechanisms?

A. Denial
B. Displacement
C. Dissociation
D. Isolation
E. Projection
F. Reaction formation
G. Regression
H. Repression
I. Somatization
J. Sublimation

I was between reaction formation and sublimation. I went with reaction formation over sublimation because i remember the example that uworld gave was: Son is angry with his father for some reason and he tries really hard to excel at sports..And i remember reaction as: Someone hates kids so they become Pediatric surgeon. Now when i re read the question while typing, it surely seems like sublimation MORE than reaction formation. According to the key answer is sublimation. Thoughts?

A 57-year-old man has had a myocardial infarction. Development of which of the following sequelae of the infarction is associated with decreased survival?

A. Avoidant personality disorder
B. Decreased platelet count
C. Decreased serum catecholamine concentration
D. Major depressive episode
E. Sexual dysfunction

I hate these type of questions. I chose C because i figured catecholamines play a role in contractility of the heart so if patient has infarction this can lead reduce contractility. However, the key says answer is D which also make sense. MI leading to depression and then patient feeling worse and can eventually die. Now as i type this, i realized that catecholamines are not synthesized in the heart so technically their synthesis and function shouldn't be impaired. This might make D a better answer? Thoughts?

First question, the question stem is basically the definition of Sublimation where you convert your experience or personal tendencies into something useful.

Second question, only MDD significantly affects the suicidal rate, nothing else really affects it. MDD patients should be on a close watch for suicide

Reaction Formation: You feel something and do the opposite. So in this example it would be having feelings towards sexually abusing someone, so instead she volunteers at a shelter for abused.

Sublimination: Is basically what they said, where you redirect the feeling towards something more acceptable.

Also what you may be thinking of is conduct disorder, but that would be manifested as something that is against social norms (Sublimation is something that doesnt go against the persons morals) and it would be a disorder as opposed to a defense mechanisms.
