On NBME 7 there was a q regarding a 5y/o girl in the 10th percentile, frontal bossing of the skull, multiple fractures and a distinct nasal quality to her voice. and they wanted to know which cell type would be defective (chondrocyte, chondroblasts, myocytes,OC, OB, or osteocytes). Can someone please help me understand the answer to this question. thanks

Osteopetrosis? (Lack of Osteoclasts)

Osteopetrosis? (Lack of Osteoclasts)

That was my guess too. I can really only think of two "frequent fracture" diseases in someone other than a 70 year old woman, and OI doesn't really fit with the other stuff, whereas you could explain the frontal bossing and nasally voice by "too much bone" if you felt like it.

Just took NBME7 today -- yeah, this one was definitely osteopetrosis (it was kind of a "classic" description with the "frontal bossing" (...and Goljan says that they don't use buzzwords on the boards)) which is a result of osteoclast dysfunction.
