Hey, how to differentiate between V. Cholera and V. parahaemolyticus?
thanks

I'm pretty sure cholera has a specific toxin that can be identified with an assay.

Parahaemolyticus ( based on it's name) may cause lysis of blood cells on agar.

Usually the story will be a patient eating shellfish & has skin wounds for parahaemolyticus and vulnificus

thanks for your input guys, actually it's an old NBME q , it mentioned multiple family members with diarrhea 24-48 h after seafood, no other clues. choices had cholera and paraheamoliticus. Answer key had it as V. paraheamolyticus. wasn't able to find a good explanation though.

Cholera is typically from contaminated water sources
Vibrio or parahaemolyticus is from contaminated seafood

Went over Uworld 2.5 times and literally written things down to the details.

The question stem will usually lead you to the right choice.

If it's related to massive watery diarrhea with electrolyte imbalance --> V. Cholera.

If the person has some type of liver disease + cellulitis w/ bullous lesions + watery diarrhea --> V. parahaemolyticus.
