Hey guys
i'm a 1st yr and we're having the nbme subject exams this week, i'm just wondering if other schools are taking these tests too. I heard that only caribbean schools take these😱cos these tests are useless , is this true? if not, are the nbme tests graded in other schools? when do they take it and how hard are they ? any help is appreciated THANKS a lot !!

uhhh, you'll see a lot of students take them. Just do a search for them on here. A ton of threads. Some count towards grades, some not.

Some are more challenging than others. I find helpful because its an external measure of how much I really aim learning. In school made tests they, they direct you at certain concepts and facts, which you eventually get tested over. These tests are based on what they think you should be learning in that course. It says how much of the subject you've grasped and how good the dept at your shcool is teaching you.

Some people try adn correlate it to teh USMLE, but I think its hard to say.

Thanks for putting down caribbean schools.....but does it matter if what they say is true? You're still taking it.

Shelf exams are very important because they tell you how you're doing as far as the NBME is concerned. If you're doing well on your shelf exams, you'll do fine on your step. After all, the same people write the test questions for both the usmle and shelf exams (my usmle had repeat questions from my second year shelfs)

NBME is good in my opinion...
you can measure where you stand among your classmates by school exam...
but this one can tell you where you are in nationwide...

for instance...you might be in top of your class but little above avg in nation ot you might be just middle of the class but still in top quarter of the nation...

i take that as measurement or predicition for USMLE...but that's just for me

we take them and they're 20% of our grade

... although the biochem department never did tell us how we did on the shelf.

The subject exams count for 20% of our grade as well and for certain classes they can replace your lowest test score if you do well...however there are several things that i think are important when you encounter these exams
1. If your school uses them as a final then you should do as many questions as you can before hand..so a Pretest book or BRS questions are helpful...
2. The BRS gives you enough info to pass it, but not enough info to get an A, so its important to study throughout the year because you dont want to be stressing over this exam when the time comes
3. Do a lot of questions and review what you had the most trouble with...
4. Do the tests that your professors write seem very difficult? If the answer is yes, then you will do fine on the subject board....however...physio which is a challenging course has a challenging subject board as well...
