We recently took the histo, anatomy, and biochem NBME shelf exams, and I was wondering how representative those were of step 1. Some questions seemed really out of left field and weren't in the first aid at all

First Aid is general guide to the Step. It is far from all inclusive.

As for the shelf's, yeah they are a pretty good indicator of the licensing exams

Questions from your NBME subject exams have a non-zero probability of appearing word for word on your Step 1 exam. Especially graphics heavy stuff which has a high production value.

WTF questions outside of First Aid may appear on your Step 1. Try to write down those questions after your subject exams and go look up the concepts. That may get you a point or two in the future.
