What are your thoughts on this new organization?
I recall Mindy posting a thread with concerns about the new onerous ABP MOC requirements for forensic pathologists. Most of us agreed with her assessment.
It would seem that the ABIM has gotten itself into a lot of financial hardship and is using MOC as a way to keep itself afloat. The NBPAS is a response to that. I would not be surprised if the ABP has similar reasons for its actions, and is using unreasonable MOC requirements, as Mindy alluded to, to stay in the black.
In addition, it is my opinion that the ABP does not do enough to ensure that the pathologists we have out there are top notch. The only requirement for writing the examination is 50 autopsies, which we all know is ridiculous. Our job market is flooded with undertrained and undereducated people, and programs are allowed to stay open because, again, the only requirement for writing the ABP exam is 50 autopsies. Adding useless MOC on top of that does nothing to ensure "quality" because the quality hasn't been sought in the first place.
I am strongly considering joining NBPAS in lieu of the ABP if that is possible (I would not be surprised if the NBPAS did not consider pathologists physicians, given how unphysician-like we are as a group)
