Can anyone tell me about the OMFS internship that is available at the University of Nebraska. I have heard that they have one that is more associated with the dental school rather than the actual OMFS program. Anyone know anything about this?

Anyone? C'mon, some of you OMS residents have to know something about this program.

I am a student at UNMC. The residency is one year and you are working in you own surgical suite that is essentially located withinn the undergraduate oral surgery clinic. The resident works primarily on the surgery cases that are too difficult for undergrad students or cases where the patient requires IV sedation. Also, you cover several sessions of the undergrad surgery clinic as a supervisor, do sugery consults for undergrads, etc. Last year the resident had his own office. He just finished and is now entering his first year of a 6 year oral surgery program. Kind of random facts, but hope it helps.

Nebraska has a very solid dental school (although I'm a bit biased ). I think you would get an awesome experience there, plus you would get to work with The Bav!! Dr. Bavitz would be your director and he is a wealth of information and a great guy. I think you would work with Dr. Ebke who is also the man!

As the above poster said, you would be doing things that are more advanced. I really don't think you can go wrong with that program. If you want to go on it would be great on the resume and would make you a better resident and if not you would gain great experience. Plus Lincoln is a great town to live in. Just my 2 cents...

GBR!!

In addition to the dental school internship, I've heard Dr. Davis (chair of OMS at Nebraska) just started an internship this year for the residency. This is presumably a traditional one year terminal internship associated with the OMS residency program in Omaha. The position is filled presently for one year - we'll see next year if they keep it around permanently. From what I understand, the dental school intern goes to the OR from time to time as well. So, you've got options. Hope that helps.

The OMFS program in Omaha actually has an intern this year that is at the Medical Center in Omaha. He acts as a resident and has all the same resposibilities and respect as the 1st year residents. It is a great spot if you are interested in OMFS or just the surgical side of dentistry. Plus the pay is pretty good. (for an intern)
