i know i'm double posting but i'm not getting much love on the medicine forums so here it goes...

did anyone receive interviews at top programs despite not having done an audition rotation there? did you receive any form of skepticism about your interest in the program at those interviews or felt less competitive to those who did one? and for those who are currently residents, were you able to match at said programs without having done an audition elective there? i'm a little concerned that i may not be able to schedule these away electives and was hoping to hear that i'd still be okay. thanks much.

I know several people who did no audition/away electives and still got interviews at big name institutions. If you cant schedule an away rotation its not going to kill your application.

I would say for sure that "audition" rotations are not necessary to get interviews in medicine anywhere including the very top programs. I think audition rotations become more important for surgical specialties like orhtopedic surgery, ENT etc... I personally didn't do any audition rotations for medicine and I got all the interviews I wanted, and I come from a very small state school with essentially no reputation. I think away rotations are a fun way to see how things are done differently at different places, but they are not necessary to get interviews. Of course I haven't matched anywhere yet so maybe I am completely wrong. :scared:

I would agree with others that they aren't necessary for the most part. The exception would be if you are dead-set on going to one of the "elite" medicine programs, and don't have an absolutely perfect application. It is most certainly possible to get interviews at the best programs without audition rotations, but doing them can make programs take notice of you when they might not otherwise. Once you get past the interview stage, it doesn't seem to matter whether you did an audition rotation or not. Of course, as another poster pointed out, we haven't matched yet so we'll see!

Some of my classmates applying to Northeast schools did away rotations (MGH, BWH, JHU) and got interviews that I did not get despite very similar stats. For them not only did the away rotations help with interviews it also allowed them to see the program over a time period of a month rather than the 2 days at interview time.
