So we have several threads on suits, pants, shoes, even watches. What about neckties!? I went out to macy's and of course the salesman duped me big time by telling me that brown suit and yellow tie and blue shirt are the way to go for interviews. so later i did some research and figured out it was wrong so i went again and got me a solid red tie. However, I've seen the people on Apprentice and the Donald and they have these super thick ties that dont move when they walk around. Plus there a beautiful big knot at the top that keeps shape. Is there a way of tying it that does that or is it the material that the tie is made with or both? Anbody can give me pointers on getting a tie that the Donald would be proud of? 😀

I think it's too hard to describe how to tie the tie on here but the best place to buy nice ties is brooks brothers....they are about $70 a piece but they are great.

oh no, i had meant the name of the type of tie. they describe them all over the internet but theres something called the windsor, half windsor and four in hand. im not sure which one is the type that gives you a thick knot.

I believe the full Windsor gives you the thickest and widest knot.

Double Windsor is by far the best knot. It holds a great shape...however, it was frustrating to learn as an awkward adolescent.

Really? I've heard red neckties are not good, conservative ties but yellow ties are acceptable. What research tells you otherwise?

You have the knots in order of descending thickness already: Windsor (thickest), Half, Four in Hand (narrowest). I would personally only use a full Windsor with a spread collar or similar shirt. The shirt, neck size, build and face width all come into play in deciding an appropriate knot. But I usually say the heck with it and go with a half Windsor, which is a good all-around choice.

Just do what I do wear a bow tie.

Go with a skirted frock coat and paisley ascot.

But seriously, as long as your tie isn't tasteless, i.e. has a naked woman or stick up like Dilbert's you're probably okay.

Not a chance. Regular ol bow ties, they are great, you dont have **** flapping around, it's not a fomite like a regular tie, and it sets you appart.

The first day they let me loose near patients and I need to dress up...I am wearing a bow tie just out of principle.

Bow ties are clean.

eBay has great ties cheap. My husband has gotten several $80-$100 ties for $5-$10 dollars. Used or new - there are great deals.

Some really nice designers: Brioni, Zegna, Canali, Ike Behar, Brooks Brothers.

There is unfortuately a bad side to the bow tie. Forget about diddling most of the attaractive women you will run into at the hospital save for a few southern belles with a romantic side.

Easiest thing in the world to do. You can get a bow tie tying manuel on the net. If that does'nt do it just drop by Brooks Brothers and ask them to teach you how to tie one.

Just don't wear a bright metallic tie...it pains me to see these. Also, don't get some el crapo 5 dollar, stiff as cardboard tie. People can tell a decent made tie from an El Crapo brand tie.

Neckties are the very definition of academic snobbery. If you wear one anywhere else, you get laughed at by everyone from the CEO to the janitor.

Don't take any advice from the Donald. His casinos are bankrupt - again.

You mean bowtimes here, right?

Lol. I'm sure the colour of you tie will not effect the interview unless it helps you to settle down. I'd just wear a tie that goes with the suit, and not worry about the colour.
Double windsor is the best knot for thickness, although as someone else said it is hard to learn how to tie. Never heard of the four-in-hand, but I use the single windsor as it is easier.
I've seen very few of my lecturers wearing bowties, in fact the only one who did was english but worked in the US for most of his career!

LIES! There have been studies confirming that people react differently to different colors.
