Okay, so here is the story. I have completed my military service obligation and will begin transitional leave in June 2014. I completed my transitional intern year at Walter Reed in 2010 and then I was stationed to be a Brigade Surgeon (general practitioner) straight out of internship. So for the past four years I have been the supervising primary care physician for 1800 soldiers 🙂

Not completely all the Army's fault as I was applying for a fairly competitive residency. However, as it stands now I am in the position of finding a job for a year until the next residency cycle comes around. Not easy as I only have an unrestricted medical license, no residency and many positions want board certified or board eligible physicians (which I completely understand).

I fully intend on completing a residency. At this time my focus would likely be on family practice with eventual EM fellowship or Internal Medicine.

I guess my question is this, is there any hope of getting a residency spot for the 2013-14 year? I would have applied this year, but certain family circumstances caused me not to at the time. Sadly things have changed and I think that getting into a residency as soon as possible is likely the best way forward.

On caveat, I would like a residency in the Oklahoma City area. That limits things I know, but I have two young kids and my wife has a new clinical dietician practice that she has setup, so re-location is not ideal.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Well since you did a transitional year at Walter Reid you are technically eligible for a Pgy-2 position. I will say try and find one that starts in July. But if you cant... With an unrestricted license you can work at an acute care center for a year. I heard the pay is great
