Hi all,

I am currently a dental student 3.5 gpa and probably around 60/120 ranked in class. It was really late by the time I realized I really want to do either OMFS/Ortho. I know there is no way directly form Dental school, I can do it now. But is there any other way like doing a GPR or AEGD for 1or 2 least amount of years to pull yourself back together and stand up as a good candidate for these specialties or I am all done and I should accept GP is the destiny. Has anyone really done that?

Please advice, Thnx 😕

Work as hard as you can to get your GPA up, do as well as you can on the NBME, get involved with your home program's OMFS program, do as many externships as you can and look into OMFS internships. If your heart is set on OMFS, do not do a GPR or AEGD. If you are a 3rd year or less, you may have a shot at a slot straight out of school. If you are a 4th year, you are already behind the 8ball on landing an intership and better get moving.

As for ortho...I have no idea. The specialties and residency training couldn't be more different. You need to know what you want to do before you embark down either path.
