  1. Pre-Dental
Hello everyone:

I re-took my DAT Today and didn't work out as well as I hoped(My RC score is too low: 15, QR= 14🙁). My science gpa is about 3.3, overall: 3.54, graduated from UCLA two years ago and this was the second time I applied this year, tons of research and volunteering, community service.

I was hoping you guys could point me in a good direction. I am in a sort of depressed mood right now;because I know I won't have a chance again this year, so my questions are:
1. Should I apply for master programs and if yes; which majors are the best suited for or look good on dental school applications?[ Public health, etc]
2. In a meanwhile can I re-apply for the third time may 2010 or once I apply for master programs, I can't re-apply and I have to wait til the last year to apply for dental school. What I meant is, can I apply for master program this december and get in for fall 2010 (for instance), then also apply for dental school in may 2010?
3. you guys tell me what should I do?🙁

Thanks alooooooT

Although your GPA is not the greatest(mine isnt either) its not what's stopping you from getting into a dental school. You need to seriously strap down and study hard for the DAT and aim high, really high because of the retakes. If you can get 20+ you should be good...For RC prep by reading scientific journals nonstop, and just read alot period..Instead of wasting ~2 years on postbacc get your stats up, along with your E.C.'s(shadowing, volunteering). Take some important(reccomended) upper div science courses...There is ALOT you can do within the next year that will make your app good, i dont believe postbacc is the route for you, getting your app spiffy IS!!

Good Luck👍

What happened on the RC section?

I am really sorry to tell you this but a 15 in RC really is. . .. kinda low for a lot of dental school!! Which method are you using for that section? Are you doing the Kaplan method? Do you just read? or do you do the search and destroy method?

Yeah I know. I got 20 on RC first time so made me not to practice for this section, which was my biggest mistake. This time I got piano passage and I freaked out. To be honest, I thought I was doing well and shooting for 20+. God knows what happened!

Ya I know...I got the piano passage too!!! That passage really was difficult to people who are not experts in reading. Good luck to you missy77 whether or not if you decide to retake it again.

I think you should just apply, a 3.54 from UCLA is solid!
apply to like 10 schools and hope 1 of them will realize your real potential and not dump your app based on a 5hr exam. Good luck

you do not need masters
you do need to improve your DAT
send both of your DAT scores to schools and call to each individual school to see if they will accept the highest numbers such as your RC of 20 from first DAT.
You can take some upper division science classes and/ or dental related job in the meantime if you do not get this cycle.

It sounds like maybe you should have spent more time studying for your academic courses and for your dat instead of accumulating a large cache in volunteering and community service. Ideally an MS program should be in the bio sciences not so much because it will help you in ds but because it will provide evidence that you can handle graduate level courses. When you could or should apply is a function of what additional improvements you are bringing to the table.
