Hey Guys
I need some advice from my fellow MS-III's and IV's out there. In October I did the rotation that I am going to guess will be the worst this year. It was my OB/GYN month and boy, it was nightmare. My attending did not like me, nor would he let me do $hiT, let alone give me credit for when I got to do something. That was from the time he saw me having a bit of nervous tremor trying to find FHT in a patient who was 16 weeks along. My pelvic time and pap experience was almost non-existent (2 pelvics and 1 pap for the month) when he told me that normally his students do 20 or 30 before they leave. I delivered no babies and the highlight of my average week was putting in staples or sutures. He told me at the end of the month "the nurses in mother-baby don't like you and neither in do they OR", my evaluation was mediocre at most. I was trying to figure out why after I had worked my a$$ off. I guess for OR it was my scrubbing and trying to stay sterile mistakes I had my first week, not eating anything and about passing out from stress and no sleep during surgery the second, or me tracking out blood that I did not notice on my shoes when I walked out of the room the last day we were in there. Who the hell knows. The OB nurses I can not figure out what their problem is. Anyways, it has gotten back to me from a friend that I am torn down and I am made of fun of on a regular basis by these same groups of people as if I am stupid or a complete ******. Sure, I may not know the answer to every PIMP question that is asked or know how to do staples or sutures perfectly, but is that a reason to still be rude 2 months after a student has gone? I may have to go back to this hospital in the future for other rotations. How do I deal with these rude people and not get in trouble from my attending? Anyone else have crap like this happen? I am quite upset and want to do more than just "forget about it".😕

How is this a problem? No matter what other rotation you do at this hospital, the chances that you'll interact with anybody from OB is very small. The chances that the OB people have enough free time on their hands to spread awful rumors about you are even smaller.

If you go back for a surgical rotation, even the scrub nurses will be different - scrub nurses tend to stay in one department and often do not do cases in other departments. And if you do interact with someone from OB - they won't be responsible for grading you anymore.

I think you'll be fine.

This definetely falls into the "Who Give a ****" category.

First of all, unless you want to Ob at this particular hospital in the future, you will have minimal interaction with this set of people.

Second, here's the big secret about Ob nurses: everybody in the hospital hates them. You will probably score points with nurses in other areas of the hospital by starting a conversation with, "Wow, I just got off Ob, and all the nurses up there hate me."

Third, nursing opinions of you mean nothing. We sit around all the time repeating this lie about how "miserable" they can make your life if you cross them, but really, they're going to do that whether they like you or hate you. You wouldn't worry about going to a hospital where the janitors or aides don't like you, so why would care about the nurses?

Ditto. OB nurses are pretty secluded from the rest of the hospital, tucked away in their own wing free to be catty to their heart's content. As long as you don't work in the L&D unit, you'll be fine.

Wait, let me get this straight. Nurses are making fun of you for being stupid and you care? That's like if a deformed circus midget was taunting you while you were attending the circus. All you have to do is remind the midget that while he's laying in a pile of hay that night and massaging his deformed gimp leg, you're going to be at home watching football.

Nobody likes those OB/GYN people anyway. They seldom wander outside their own corridors, or speak with those outside their own little world. I had a similar experience where I sucked at OB/GYN, had a God awful rotation, got a barely passing evaluation, but returned to the same hospital to do Cardiology with no problems.

I suggest you lay off the jokes about disabled people if you want to have a career in medicine.

Dude, you just completed what would be my dream OB rotation. I only hope I'm so lucky.

My question is why do you care what the nurses think? I suppose it hurts having them make fun of you but really they were going to do that anyway. I've found that most nurses make fun of med students. Whenever I start a new rotation, there's always some story about the last guy who did this or that and they regularly make fun of the interns and residents in front of us.

Look on the bright side: It's over and it could have been worse. When I did O&G I had to get 5 deliveries just to be eligible to sit the exam (stupid department rule). That was torture because it basically meant you had to kiss the nurse's a** in order to pass the course. And the nurses knew it so they had ultimate power over us. Whatever they said to us we had to suck it up and smile or we'd have to do over the course. I've never hated anything more in my life because the doctors completely sold us out and made us the nurse's bitch

So the OB nurses were rude to you. Big deal, unless you're planning on going into OB/Gyn. They were rude to me during my OB/Gyn rotation too. Did I care? No. I just said to myself, "F&ck them. I'm not coming back to do OB here. Amd I don't plan on socializing with them either" A lot of students encounter rude nurses, especially during their OB rotation. IMHO, any nurse who is busy spreading catty rumors is either insecure, or has way too much time on her hands, or both.

Don't feel as if you are the only one Ob nurses hate. OB nurses hate EVERYONE, including other nurses. When I did my Ob nursing rotation, the nurses ate me alive. They also ate my instructor alive. In fact, if another nurse from another department floats there, they eat them alive as well.

Part of me has to agree - who cares what nurses think.... but on the other hand I have to think to myself : 2 MONTHS LATER?!?!?! For anybody to be made fun of anywhere, months after they were gone is really something. Wow!

Have any other students rotated in OB in that time- if it was just hateful nurses, then once they had fresh meat they should forget and move on to the next sucker. But if others have come and gone and you are still the one they think of when its time to make fun of someone, there had to be something to make you stand out. Ouch. Damn.

I agree with the previous posters who said that nurses often can be hateful towards everyone and that you shouldn't let them get you down (don't let them have that power over you). Heck, one attending told me that there are certain nurses he would like to "kick in the face" because they ARE so rude to everyone. However, we're all obligated to be civil towards hospital staff, and you may end up having to grit your teeth and smile confidently whenever ridiculous crap gets thrown at you by the nurses (or worse yet, the sassy secretaries who sit at the nurse's stations and are randomly bitter and rude despite the fact that they don't have to clean up blood and feces on a regular basis). Some attendings do talk to the nurses to get a feel for whether or not you have behaved professionally and can "work well with others," so definitely try to keep your cool. Don't let them smell any weakness, and maybe they'll let up on you a little.
