OK guys, here me out.

I'm a third year student planning away rotation for next year... I would like to do my residency in NYC but I'm not sure if I should do my away in mt sinai or st. vincent's. I just have that nagging feeling that even if I do the away at mt sinai, it wouldn't help me out. This is b/c i'm an avg student in an avg US md school with avg board score with mostly HS's in my 3rd year clerkships. (Got H in family med and anes sub-I 🙂 I'm like so avg it's scary 😀 Mt Sinai I heard is very competitive (some people ranking it higher than cornell/columbia). On the other hand, if i do an away at StVincent, I think I might improve my chances significantly. If given a choice to do residency at either, however, I would give Mt Sinai a slight edge

Anyone know how competitive I'll be with these two places? Where should I do my away at? Thanks.

Doing an away at Sinai could be both good and bad. First, it's an amazing place to do anesthesia, so you will love it there... but you will be hard pressed to compete with all the other outside rotators there for Adam Levine's (PD) time. You will also have many more opportunities to make a BAD impression by doing something wrong, looking lazy, etc, than if you were to simply do an interview there- of course, an interview is guaranteed if you rotate there, whereas it may be hard to get if you don't. This is a tough one. Levine takes people who he wants to spend time hanging in the OR with, so it's very personal, and your 'averageness' should only matter if your personality is average too.

Check out Scutwork.com for a recent review of St. Vincent's by a current resident in the program, it was very negative. You may want to reconsider applying there. I didn't even rank them.

NYU is an excellent up and coming program, and it would be a great option if your credentials aren't quite enough for the big three NY programs. I did a rotation at NYU and got a letter from Blanck, the chairman, who is very well known. I think that and my board score got me interviews everywhere in NYC. Good luck.

Thanks a lot, powermd. You're right, that was a pretty brutal review of StV...

My two cents …
Ok first, I partially agree with POWERMD concerning Mt. Sinai, yes it’s an awesome place to do an away elective, and you’ll be hooked from the moment you get there. However, your time there shouldn’t spent trying to get Adam Levine’s attention. Speaking from personal experience my away rotation there was excellent, I received two letters of recommendation from very prominent anesthesiologist, and at the end of the match I landed at my number one choice.
First make your own decision about where you want to do an away rotation, and be positive. Honestly, there are always going to be individuals who you don’t mesh with. Think of it as a month long interview, and you’ll be fine.
Good luck.
