I am going to ask my family physician for a letter this Friday when i go in for an appointment. We are cool so I don't think he will have a problem writing a letter for me. The problem is, I kind of waited too long to ask him (I think), so I think it's too late for me to shadow him THEN ask him to write a letter...so I will probably just ask him to write a letter. Is there a way to blur this line to schools, as in say that I shadowed him when I did not? I need an alternative to just asking him to pretend like I shadowed him? Thanks

It's still early May. Just shadow him for a week or two and then ask for a letter.

I agree with the above poster try to shadow him a few times before they write your letter. You don't need your LORs until secondaries which come out late-June. So if you can shadow him a few times this month, you can still give him plenty of time to write the letter.

So you basically want your LOR writer to lie? That is starting out your application season on a bad foot dont ya think? Karma is a bitch.

Its May dude...AACOMAS JUST opened!!!

LIke others above me said....go shadow for a few hours. My LOR writer was a family friend and knew me well....so I just shadowed for 8 hours one sunday and he wrote the letter....if he already knows you well thats all you will need.

Do you have ample exposure to healthcare to make your PERSONAL decisions that this is the right field for you??

Thanks. When should I mention anything about a Letter? Before shadowing, once I finish shadowing or ?

I would do it in the beginning when you set up the shadowing. Just ease into the conversation regarding what the requirements are for med school applications and it should come out naturally. My experience is that most DO's kinda know the drill. The doc I shadowed brought up the subject of the letter himself once we started to set up a schedule together.
