Cliffs:

-Starting MS2

-I have done 2 summers of research, but no publications. The research was in orthopedics and radiology...both docs said they would give me LORs for residency. Is this worthless since I never got published?

-No community service yet

-Side note...no AOA/Class ranking for MS1/2...so I can probably study harder for boards keeping this in mind.

-Aiming for a top IM program...

Help me out buddies!

Why would you go for LORs from radiologists or orthopedic surgeons you did a summer of research with if you're going to apply for IM? I'm so confused here.

Do some dedicated research in an IM field or write a case report or something if you really want to. Honestly, letters of rec from the chair of your IM dept is going to hold a lot more weight in those residencies.

Also everyone at my school said it doesn't matter what field you research in as long as you do something. They were wrong?

Yes, research in any field looks good for IM. However, publications are absolutely a must... doesn't have to be big, just something you can talk about and defend.

Really. I read that like only 10% of people get publications in med school....Also what your saying isn't make a ton of sense because you don't need to be published to talk about your research and defend it. It's not your fault if the patient data didn't work out or it took too long for things to pan out...

Is it easier to publish stuff 3rd year? Fuk man no one tells me this stuff lol
