Need Advice on My Situation

Hello,

Well I've finished my third year in college and am looking to get started on those medical school apps only....I'm unsure if my profile is strong enough to compete.

I have a 3.3 GPA and a 28Q on the MCAT. Standardized tests have never been my strong suit (back all the way to the PSAT and even those tests we took in middle school), however my belief is that the numbers are only one part of the equation.

To some my experiences may seem typical and mediocre, however I see all I've done as great accomplishments. Volunteering, lab work, shadowing, etc. are all things within my profile.

I'll admit I'm not a super star in that I have a very high GPA and MCAT and have a published paper or such (although I am acknowledged on a paper), however I fully believe that I have the ability, determination, and perfect personality to become the greatest doctor the surgical specialty has ever seen.

So I wanted to put my situation to you all to see what you thought. I'm of strong belief that my future is what I make of it, and by that I mean that I can become a fantastic doctor no matter what school I attend. So please, any advice or encouragement you may have on whether or not I should push forward would be greatly appreciated.

It's great that you believe in yourself, you need to have that in order to get into med school. But, in order for adcoms to believe in you, you need to raise your GPA and MCAT. I'm not sure if you have a chance of getting into med school this year with those stats. I would suggest trying to raise your GPA to around 3.5, be it through your senior year in college and/or through post bac. Also, it's a good idea to get your MCAT higher, I'd say to at least a 30. So, study for the MCAT this coming year and then take it again. Keep up in the EC's, and if you can get your name on a paper somehow as an author, I would def suggest it.

If you are set on applying to Med schools this year, with your stats you should consider an osteopathic program where they traditionally accept students with lower stats. D.O.'s are just as important to the medical community as M.D.'s and the opportunities for surgical residency will be there for you. Best of luck!
