So I just finished my spring term and I did really poorly in orgo II. I got a C+. I'm currently a sophomore, going to be a junior next year. I've had all A's and A-'s up until this point. I've got a lot of EC's which probably contributed to why I got a C+. I wanted your guys' opinion on whether if I should retake orgo II next year. If I get the professor I want, I'm pretty confident I can get at least an A-. My school doesn't drop the first grade so both the C+ and whatever I get will be on my transcript. Do you guys think this is a good idea or not?

There are a lot of threads on this already. I wouldn't retake the class. IMO anyone can retake a course and jump 2 letter grades the second time around. I've seen plenty of people get accepted to medical school with a couple C's. Don't worry. Just do the best you can on everything else.

don't retake.

To those of you telling the TS not to retake the course, how will medical schools feel about her application versus someone else who did decide to retake and got an A the second time around.

Additionally, does getting high scores in Biochemistry and MCAT usually show that the person is capable of medical school despite getting Cs in Organic Chemistry?

I'm also in a similar situation as the OP except I'm planning on taking Biochemistry next semester. I'm planning on doing well and also retaking Organic II around next summer.

the A second time around is not guaranteed, obviously. that's a big point that should not be underestimated. if you don't get a solid A, it will average out to a 3.0 or lower.

it is less impressive to repeat a course and get an A than it is to ace a more advanced course, like biochem.

getting a C in organic doesn't mean you cant handle medical school. getting an A in organic doesn't prove squat either. individual grades don't matter nearly as much as your composite and the trend in your grades.

If your overall grades are good, admissions would assume you could get an A on repeating the course. Again, I know plenty of people in medical school with C's in organic who didn't repeat.

Like another poster, I would take harder classes and prove yourself in those. High scores on the MCAT can go a LONG way.

I think repeating Orgo is a waste of your time, unless you have this newfound dream of getting a phd in organic chemistry - which a friend of mine recently decided to do at Stanford. Crazy fool he is.

I wouldn't blame your EC's as to why you got a C+. That being said, don't retake it if you have a good overall gpa. One bad grade won't kill you.
