Hi everyone,

I just wanted to get some opinions regarding my chances for matching this year into anesthesiology. I scored a 228 on step 1 and have a decent CV with lots of student involvement and decent LORs. However, I have no research experience. I was feeling OK about my chances and had received about 7 or 8 interview invites thus far. However, I recently found out that I scored subpar on Step 2 CK with a 218, and although I passed all my rotations, I didn't get any honors in any of them. Although I got "high pass" on many of them, I am pretty sure my final transcript will just note it as "Pass". I think this recent news has really hurt my chances and I'm pretty bummed out, especially since I thought I did pretty well on my first interview recently (but now they probably won't consider me anymore because of the recent step 2 score). Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I think you'll be fine.

If you're worried about your number of interviews, you may wanna add a few more applications, and be sure to apply broadly (ie: across "tiers" of residency programs). You do (or did) have the option to not release your Step 2 scores to programs - no one has to know about that score unless you choose (or chose) to release it.

You'd ideally want to rank 12 programs or so. Remember, you're numbers are not at all bad - don't rank a program you KNOW you won't be happy at!

Good luck!

I'd say assuming you're not a bozo at interview time and you apply to a broad range of programs, your chances of matching into the field are 100%.

If you have very competitive programs on your wish list, you still have a good shot at matching at such a place, but certainly not 100% as there will be plenty of students with better scores, research, honors, etc.

But you're in good shape at 85+% of programs out there I'd say.
