Hey Guys,
So i don't know what to do as if now I am a Sophomore, and i have a 2.0 GPA at University of Texas. i really want to be a dentist my whole entire life and knowing the fact i need at least a 3.5 gpa just puts me down so much i am also retaking organic chemistry.
What are my chances of actually getting in to dental school and all the internships are so competitive to get I cant even find a dentist to shadow i literally went around looking for dentist office to shadow all of them just say NO!!. I don't know what to do I still have to take all my other science classes. Any suggestion on what i can do?? other way to gain experience? get in to dental school? I really don't want to apply more then once to denal shool cuz my family in really bad position of financial trouble i really want to help my parents i dont know what to do!!!!

I hate how everything revolves aroung GPA!!!! 🙁

Its going to be hard to get in anywhere with anything below a 3.0 at the VERY lowest end, and with that you will need to have super amazing DAT scores. If your GPA isnt at least a 3.0 by the time you are ready to apply, I'd suggest Masters or Post-Bac. Continue doing well, you still have 2 more years, who knows, maybe you might be able to get to a 3.2-3.3. Even with that GPA, nothing below a 20 on the DATs would cut it. Hope that helps
Gluck

Why are you getting a 2.0? either study, transfer to easier school, or reevaluate your priorities.

I am a Sophomore, and i have a 2.0 GPA at University of Texas.

If you get a 4.0 Junior year (unlikely), you will have a ~2.66 GPA. If you get a 4.0 Senior year as well (unlikely), you will have a ~3.0 GPA. Even with a 3.0, you'll prob need a Masters degree, so it looks like you are about 3 years from applying to Dental School. The Masters, combined with absolutely killing the DAT, will get you in somewhere. You have a long and hard road ahead of you, but if it is your dream and you'll willing to work your ass off from now on, you can do it.

If you really truly tried your hardest and put school first yet still got the 2.0 the last two years, then you might need to look into a new profession. However, I believe that everyone here on these boards is really intelligent, and thus if the GPA is low I attribute this to work ethic rather than intelligence, so if that's the case, it's time to buckle down and get your **** together. You can do it! Patience and hard work and sacrifices will pay off in the end.

Your gpa is low-check
You do not have a dentist that you see regularly-check
You don't want to apply more then once-check
You don't think gpa should be an important factor in admission-check.

If the best you can do in undergrad is a 2.0, what makes you think that you will survive one semester in ds?

I concur that. Well put doc.

yeah, forget about dental school. You will be carrying more than 20 credits worth of classes per semester, and it will be difficult for you to survive that if you are already struggling

first of all, i'm going to assume that you're smart but just didn't put in the time and effort to get good grades.

if it's really your dream, then spend every minute you have studying. First of all, get all A's from here on out. It's hard, but you can do it. Dental schools want to see a rising trend for people with low gpas. If you can get all A's in 6 or 7 upper division science classes, it will help you out tremendously. If you end up making A's in many upper division bio classes, then i'd suggest you to retake any pre-req courses that you failed or made C's in (bio, chem, ochem, etc) and ace them all.

I'm going to be completely honest with you. it doesn't look too bright for you and i wouldn't apply anytime soon. if you are really determined and can do all of the stuff mentioned above, then your chances will be greatly improved.

As for shadowing, there are a million dentists here in austin. go to as many as you can and don't give up. join texas pre-dent society and ask them to help you find a dentist.

last but not least, you have to kill the DAT.

you've got a lot going against you, and instead of going the extra mile, you're going to have to go the extra 1000 miles.

good luck.
