The debt is something everyone has to decide on his or her own. For me, it was worth the extra loans to go to Goucher over a DIY at a local school or a lesser-known program. My roommates and I sweat about the debt-stuff all the time, but the fact is most doctors finish med school with a ridiculous amount of debt and manage to do just fine. In the grand scheme of things, the $42,000 of debt I accumulate this year will be just a drop in the bucket compared to med school loans, and like you said it's an investment.
